dryfood minefield !!
i was feeding noah bakers puppy food until last night when i saw a lot of you say it was rubbish
and the equivilent to mcdonalds.
anyway, went to pets4home? they have just about any type you care to mention , but all the "best"
brands mentioned on here were very expensive, someone mentioned chappie and i looked at this and its seems
ok as does wainwrights, anyhow i ended up with a 7.5kg bag of james wellbeloved for £20.
harringtons? anyone?

That's meant to be a good brand of dog food. Noah will thank you in the long run, I'm sure and the picture of him in your avatar is gorgeous.

JWB isn't bad, certainly a lot better than bakers.
Have a look at http://www.whichdogfood.co.uk/ it's pretty helpful for seeing what's good and what's not, also useful for getting a rough idea of feeding costs as some foods seem a lot more expensive when they're not as you feed less. You can also usually get food cheaper online than mentioned on that website so can often work out cheaper than it says.
I feed Applaws at the moment which I pay about £35/40 for a 12.5kg bag online.

If it helps only up until a few weeks ago both of my 2 were on Wainwrights from Pets at Home and we found it fine, we have now changed / in the process of changing to Fish 4 dogs because it's a highly recommended food though a little more expensive.
I can honestly say other than a bit of boredom creeping in the Wainwrights was a really good option for us and everyone has always commented on Tilly's beautiful shiney coat , for which that was partly responsible.
Baker's , Wagg, and generally all Supermarket own brand foods should be avoided at all costs due to the generally poor ingredients to be found in them, but there are good cheaper alternatives out there but I doubt very much you will get them at the price of these inferior products

Re: dryfood minefield !!
Just like Dave, I too was feeding Zeus Wainwrights dry but I'm in the process of moving to Fish4Puppies. I got a 12.5kg bag for £40 which says it should last about a month.
Even though Zeus's coat is very shiny, the two main reasons I'm moving from Wainwrights to Fish4Puppies is because one, his poo is also soft/dribbly and I'm hoping F4P sorts that out and two, because I've heard its a very good food for dogs with sensitive stomachs - which Zeus has!

Rocky is fed Barking Heads which is another quality brand. James Wellbeloved is good too, Rocky used to have this but then became bored of it hence he is now on the BH.

Re: dryfood minefield !!
I didn't feed Tilly puppy food, I fed her a dry food were I knew the protein was good quality, that is a lor more important.
when looking for a dry food I look at the ingredients first, if cereal is the first on the list I walk away, if there are several forms of cereal I walk away from it. I won't have a food that has a lot of additives either, in some of the dry foods there are a lot and they have the same effect on our dogs as our children.

Totally agree, I went to PAH yesterday and was just generally looking at ingredients in dog food and I seen some horrendous ones in there. There was one which had 4% meat content in it, 4%!!! How does this stuff get passed for sale?

Re: dryfood minefield !!
Just trying Lathams with my fosters - moderate protein content, and wheat-free - and they all seem to like it.
Reasonable amount of fats and EFAs in it and not much over the price per kg of some of the cheapo foods - but with a fair-looking nutritional profile.
Might make a good middle-range alternative.
If I was keeping a dog and had time to adjust its diet properly, I'd be feeding raw, however.

Re: dryfood minefield !!
Yep i've used Simpsons and its a good food IMO.
If you place an order before 11am 9 times out of 10 your orders arrived the next day.
I wean pups on simpsons too.
The stools are firm and not smelly & no bum burps
One food thats widely used but rarely mentioned is CSJ. They do a large range of different diets to suit each dogs needs.
Its gentle on your pocket too.
Dont let the WORKING DOG wording put you off, most companies now add this to by pass the VAT .
Some of mine are on COMPLETE TRIPE which is £20.80p for a 15kg bag, the delivery fees a bit pricey of £6.85 per 30 kg, so it makes sence to order 2 bags at a time

Re: dryfood minefield !!
I brought Marley the puppy food from f4p last night i just checked out the link for where you can get it cheaper but you are only saving a few £'s and they dont do the puppy food, on the linked one you have to pay delivery if your not ordering over £40 where as f4p its free delivery, i ordered him the puppy food, the oil and also joined the puppy club to get extra discounts. Need to get him of puppy meat as his bottoms stinks
