Leo has had the snip! - Question
Leo went in to have the snip this morning, i wasn't overly keen on having it done, but my Mrs was insistent given that we have a baby due next week and he had started showing signs of dominance being overly protective, we've had it done in the hope that it might subdue his instincts a bit. Also he has a skin allergy so we didn't want him breeding, even if it was by accident.
My mrs has just received a call from the Vets saying the op went well and he is okay, but asked if she could collect him a bit earlier as he is being a bit 'whiney'. She is collecting him in 45 minutes, but i'm at work for another 3 hours so wont see him til later.
My question is: How long will it take for him to return to his normal self?

Hope he isn't in too much pain and is soon up and about. Surely you dont want him to be his normal self, isn't that why he had it done anyway
I'm sure he will be fine in a week or so, just take things steady for a few days.

Please don't take this the wrong way but castration isn't likely to affect any jealousy or protectiveness, only training and taking care how you introduce the baby & dog will do that.

I agree with Caryll, how you introduce him to your baby is far more important than neutering. When I introduced my dog to a baby I let my dog sniff his feet and lick them if he wanted to. I was careful and had someone else holding the baby whille I saw to the dog.

Oh i know the training side of things, that's all ready sorted. In fact the vet actually said today how well trained he is.
He is great with children and i'm sure he will be great with our littlun, it was more in the hope that it might calm down his boisterousness.
He's home now and feeling sorry for himself. We have to somehow stop him running around and are not allowed to take him on a walk for 5 days!

Re: Leo has had the snip! - Question
It'll have very little impact on his boisterousness either.
But in answer to your original question, he'll be back to normal pretty quickly. In fact you'll probably have trouble keeping him quiet until the stitches come out!

Re: Leo has had the snip! - Question
Marley was done on monday, had to pick him up early like you too due to his changing from staffy noises which they thought was cute to Howling which they wernt impressed with. as soon as he got home he zonked out on floor until about half eleven at night.I took him for a slow brief walk around the block that night. next day he was back to his old self.
I was given 4 days worth of pain killers and anti inflamitaries and told to take him on light walks only.
He has internal stitches that dont need removing and the wound had calmed down by day 2. also he reacted pretty badly to where they trimmed his hair and had some redness there for a few days aparently thats a staffy thing too.
just keep an eye out when hes cleaning down below as they like to get a sneaky lick in on the wound. I have a victorian collar but havent had to use it as yet thank god as keeping that on him would be a nightmare.
Hope your boy recovers just as fast!

Good luck on keeping him quiet and I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

Re: Leo has had the snip! - Question
He is now feeling like his normal self, and we are having a nightmare trying to keep him calm and stopping him from jumping and sprinting all over the place. Slightly concerned about this weird cough he has, the vet said it was a normal reaction to the tube he had inserted in his throat whilst under anesthetic, but it sounds horrible. Also he has stopped drinking water which is slightly worrying, will monitor it tonight and if he's still like it we will call the vet. Thankfully he is eating properly.

Re: Leo has had the snip! - Question
The coughing is fairly normal - it should pass in a day or so, but his throat may be a bit sore & that's why he won't drink. Try giving him a couple of ice cubes to crunch - it might help soothe his throat.

Yea we've done that, thanks Caryll. His cough seems to be going away so hopefully he will be all better by the time i get home from work.
