Snip or no snip
Hi! Kai is 2! Looking for a bit of advice about getting my dog castrated! I've heard it calms him down and stops him humping anything and everything!
I've also heard that it can be bad for them and make them go in bad moods?
Any help would be great!

Re: Snip or no snip
Dogs are all different. We have had our previous dog neutered, and in all honesty, it did nothing to calm him. He was exactly the same as before the neutering. Fair enough, he didn't hump anything, but he hardly ever did that before.
The choice remains yours to make, taking into consideration your circumstances etc.
Welcome from me, Maska and Loki

Re: Snip or no snip
Neutering does not calm a dog down, it may not stop the humping either, Cyril humps and he was neutered as a puppy, not by me, I didn't have him then.
I will always get a bitch neutered but not a dog, many dogs will wander if they smell a bitch in season and they can smell them 4 miles away. When I was a child, that is far too many years ago to remember , nobody had their dogs neutered but the dogs were better behaved then than most are now. The were left to wander round so they got plenty of exercise which many dogs don't get enough of these days.
If you decide to keep him entire then he must be very well trained and obedient, you don't want to give people the impression that your dog is out of control and you are irresponsible, if you were you wouldn't be asking this question, you are trying to do what is right for your dog, he is a very lucky boy.
While neutering him may prevent testicle cancer it can also cause other problems, with some breeds there is a high incidence of bone cancer with neutered dogs. Some puppies that are neutered too young never mature mentally, this has happened with Cyril, he is a puppy brain in an adult body which is a nightmare but he is getting better with good management and training. Also with some pups the growth plates are slow to seal so the pup grows to tall which can cause problems.
Neutering a dog doesn't cause bad moods either.
At 2 years old he is at a good age to neuter but it has to be your choice, to help you have a read at these links as well as the one put higher up, the more information you have the better the decision you will make for your dog.

Re: Snip or no snip
The choice, in the end, is down to you.
You should read as many articles etc as you can, both for and against & then look at your dog and his temperament. If he's a slightly nervous dog, I wouldn't get him done as castration can, in some cases, increase nervous aggression.
Castration won't, necessarily, calm a dog down or stop any humping - even bitches will hump! It's more a sign of dominance & over excitement (not the sexual kind!).
If you do decide to get him done, then he's at a good age to do it as he's now fully mature.

Re: Snip or no snip
Pros and cons, all you can do is list them out and see what you come up with. Speaking from experience we had a dog snipped on the advice of a vet because of aggression problems, it didn't work for us, in fact the problem became worse, obviously this was only one dog and it certainly would not apply to all.

Hi and welcome.
I know we will have Callie spayed when she is a little older. I don't want the responsibility of finding good homes for puppies, with so many dogs that need homes, that is something to think about as well.

Re: Snip or no snip
All neutering does is prevent litters. No real evidence is certain it will solve DA, excitement or behavior issues. Be proactive and get some training, that will impact the dog more so than snipping a dog. Anothet thing it definitely is, is a way a vet gets you to spend money in his practice by saying what it could do instead of telling what it wouldn't do
Solves litters, that's it
