New baby/new puppy
Hi there, haven't been here in a very long time, wow the place has changed and it all looks lovely, well done Steve.
Hope your all well and that all your doggies are doing great.
So, I'm here for some advice as I haven't a clue on this subject.
My daughter who lives with me is expecting her first baby (my first grandson) in 7 weeks and she will be (hopefully ) moving into her flat maybe a week or so before the birth, she is seeing how she feels, but she will be taking baby home to her new home.
My daughter and Lola are very very close, and it seems Lola has become ever more closer the bigger she gets, we aren't sure if Lola can tell she is with baby and becoming more clingy or what.
Sorry to waffle, I will get to the point in a second
I have also decided to have another pup.
So my question is, firstly, how do we introduce Lola and baby. I trust Lola, but I'm also aware of the bond between my daughter and Lola, and that jealousy can do all sorts to dogs. I would never trust 100% and will always have in mind the babies safety. This will, I know, become apparent to Lola, but I won't be able to help that as the well being of new baby is of paramount importance. But I want to get it right first time, I don't want to have to lock Lola away whenever my daughter visits with baby.
So to my next question, as Lola is 2 in October, I feel now is the right time to introduce a new puppy, but as the new baby is due 22nd October, I don't want to put too much onto Lola.
What I had thought was, maybe if I introduce puppy before baby is born, it may take away some of the jealousy that Lola will endure and that it would be more like she wouldn't be that bothered by baby as she has a new pup to contend with. Is this a crazy or a good idea? Would like your thoughts and any advice would be great thanks.
P.S Nice to be back here

Re: New baby/new puppy
Hey, how are you? We've missed you!
Firstly, congratulations to your daughter for the soon-to-be-born baby, any idea of the sex yet?
Personally I'd wait until the baby's born & Lola's got used to her being there before you get a pup. Maybe a couple of months after? New year-ish.
To get her used to the baby, why not get a cloth & wrap the baby in it for a couple of minutes & then let Lola have it - that way she'll know the smell of the baby even before they're introduced. Then, just let her sniff at the baby while she's in a carry cot/pram & graduate to the baby being held by her mum & you. I'm sure she'll take to her really well.

I agree with Caryll. Those are two big changes so it's best to go slow and be on the safe side.
Congrats and welcome back.

Re: New baby/new puppy
agrre as above introduce baby scent and then baby, pup can come later , staffs love babys so she will have enough to cope with without giving her another one to look after

Re: New baby/new puppy
Thanks for the great advice. I think your right Caryll about the scent, I never even thought about that. I'm going to have one his vests and let her have that a few days after he's born.
Oh and it's a boy, which is going to be really amazing as our family is full of girls. I have 2 sisters, my one sisters has 3 girls, I have 3 girls, my eldest has a girl, so he will be a spoilt sod
And again your right about the pup, too much for Lola to cope with all at once, I was just thinking as a way of distraction, but I think we need to get in used to not having my daughter around and also a new baby.
We can wait for pup, I'm sure I'll have my hands full aswell with new mum and my grandson.
cheers for all the advice, it's great to have this place to come and ask questions.

We are all excited now, only a week to go, although midwife has said that my daughter could go 2 weeks over.

Huh! Wouldn't take too much notice of what the midwife says - I was told both mine were heading for on time deliveries............my son was born two weeks early & my daughter was born two weeks late!
