Someone please help! I'm desperate
First of all hello to everyone, I've just joined the forum - due to the sheer desperation of the situation!
I have a staffy, Bruce, who is 13 in December this year.
We have never really had any problems with him the whole time we have had him and he has been a brilliant dog and best friend. I couldn't imagine my life without him!
However, recently he has now started to cry and whine constantly. To the point where me, my Dad and my brother are all at breaking point with him! We visited the vets with him yesterday, but this was due to an ear infection that he is suffering with. We asked the vet about him crying and he put this down to old age but surely there must be a reason for it.
From the moment we all get back from work until the time we go to work the next morning he cries and whines. He can be walked and fed and watered and he will still cry constantly. He has now even started waking us up all through the night, we are getting no sleep so you can understand how desperate I am.
Please can someone else tell me if they experience this from their dog, what the causes are and what I can do to either stop or improve the situation?
Help appreciated and thanks in advance.

Hiya and welcome from me and Moo.
There will be a reason for a 13 year old to whine, apart from the ear has the vet looked at anything else?

Re: Someone please help! I'm desperate
He's had an ear infection before which was treated with drops. This second time its nowhere near as bad as the first time he had it.
He's always been a whiner but not to this extent. Before it was just an attention thing but now even if you've got him on your lap he doesn't give it up. It's really been like this for the past couple of weeks. He had also started weeing in the house but that seems to have stopped now but the crying and whining all night has taken over now.
Vet also did a urine test on him and nothing came up on that either. Said he seemed a very healthy 13 y/o.

Re: Someone please help! I'm desperate
I think the ear infection could be quite painful and if he's only been whining for a couple of weeks then who knows, think you have to give a little time to let this clear up first

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
I would suggest a second opinion from another vet. There must be a reason for the crying. How are his senses in general ? Sight and hearing apart from the ear infection?

Re: Someone please help! I'm desperate
Hi i have a 13 year old female. She can moan for no reason at all too, but if i nudge her and tell her to stop she does.
I have noticed with my old girl her eyes are abit smokey so suggesting her eye sights failing, plus her hearing is going now too so i've put some of her whingeing down to that.
Personally i would ask the vet again about him, and just say you know your dog and you have a feeling somethings not right with him.

We have a 19year old JRT x and she winges and whines all the time too. Sometimes you can give her everything she possibly wants and she will still scream and cry, sometimes waking us up at night. I find if I take her for a little walk round the block before bed she is tired and sleep through. Also there are certain places she wants to be and if we shut her in one room she will have a headfit. She never used to be like this but like Denise's dog it seems to be getting worse with her deteriorating eyes and ears. Sorry thats really unhelpful since I don't give you any way to stop it, maybe a little bit more exercise if he can handle it?

Hi & welcome.
Is it possible that he's got a touch of arthritis or rheumatism? Or maybe he has a tummy ache & might need an old-age-pensioner food?

I was going to say what food are you feeding her, also you chould ask the vet to give her a pain killer if that stops her crying you know she is in some sort of pain.

Re: Someone please help! I'm desperate
I would go back to vet. Did you get any pain killers prescribed? Ear infections are painful. Eliminate the physical and then you are better able to assess why he is whining.

Re: Someone please help! I'm desperate
Did the vet do blood tests? I lost my lovely old staffie, Dillon, just after Christmas, he had multiple problems with his kidneys, liver etc. this wasn't picked up despite the fact he was under the vets care for months for recurrent ear infections and arthritis. I'd get him checked out again and ask for the bloods to be done.

Re: Someone please help! I'm desperate
Just thought I would update you all and thanks for all of your help.
Unfortunately we had to take Bruce to an emergency vets on Monday evening. He had suffered a turn for the worse and his whining/crying had got work.
It turns out that he had suffered a stroke and was suffering from prostate cancer. Of course at the age of 13 he had to be put down. We are trying our best to deal with a rather huge loss.

This was a picture of him recently, we had no idea there was anything wrong with him!
Thanks for all your help guys.

Oh, how awful for you! I'm so sorry.
Please stay on here and join in the talk if you feel able to. They leave a terrible hole in our lives when they go, but maybe we can help you to cope?

Oh how very sad for you, I can only imagine how you must be feeling
My old girl is 15.5 years and she is really struggling lately and I feel really useless when I don't know what is wrong or how I can settle her. She is not crying, just "lost" and so restless.
Sending big hugs to you and your family ><
RIP Bruce, such a darling old man in his photo

I am so sorry Bruce is now at the Rainbow Bridge, it is so hard when they go, I lost 4 dogs in 11 months and still miss them all.
What I find helps me is Rescue Remedy, it has Star of Bethlehem in which helps when you are grieving and you have to grieve.

I am so, so sorry for your loss.
I know from my own recent experiences that it comes as such a shock when your dog is fine one minute, then seriously ill the next.
I am truly gutted for you.

I am so sorry, it is so hard to let them go, you have stopped him suffering by being so unselfish. I find Rescue Remedy helps me through these sad times, I wouldn't have got through my late husband's funeral without it.
Bruce looks like my Ellie, like Bruce she was wonderful.

Re: Someone please help! I'm desperate
Aw poor little pup, so sad, I'm very sorry to hear this outcome.
Some vets are useless to be honest, I had a Doberman die of heart disease which wasn't picked up by the vet, she was probably in pretty bad pain for a long time before she died. Dogs are so very good at hiding pain.
