Fostering Olympic - staffie girl looking for a forever home
My fourth staffie or staffie cross foster in a month, Olympic was rescued from the pound, where she was due to be put to sleep after having puppies.
This smiley girl is now with me for around a week for home assessment before returning to the rescue centre, and is a little on the timid side at the moment - slightly nervous of going through doorways, and shakes a bit if you try to give her too much of a fuss.
There's no other background on this girl. No idea of her age, what happened to her pups, what her "story" is.
Ollie, as I'm calling her, knows "sit" for a treat. She also knows "lie down", which sent her straight into the rollover position.
This beautiful "blue" staffie then went on to have a small game of fetch the football and let me have the ball back with no problems at all.
She let me examine her all over. She has quite dry skin between the toes, a large skin tag on her hind quarters, and a weepy eye, but otherwise seems to be in fine fettle. I'll be talking to the vet about the eye and what's best for the skin tag but these are minor issues.
Ollie is now well and truly fast asleep on the dog bed, letting out the occasional staffy grunt of contentment.
First impressions are of a sensible, slightly timid girl who only wants to please.
I'll let her catch up on her sleep, then take her out for a big walk tonight.
Ollie's first game of fetch is here:https://s1256.photobucket.com/albums/ii487/oumaths/Olympic/?action=view¤t=ollie-justarrived.mp4
Many thanks to the board for their support in allowing this to be posted.

Re: Fostering Olympic - staffie girl looking for a forever home
Ollie is playing the "staffy grunt ensemble" in D-minor tonight - I'm not sure what she's dreaming about, but I want some.
She disappeared while I was cooking earlier and I got worried - thought she'd somehow jumped the fence.
Needn't have worried - she'd found the humans bed and managed to lie right way round with her head on the pillow.

oh shes lovely, poor girl losing her pups looks like shes got a lot of milk. Just be careful of mastitis look out for any hardness on her breasts. You can use warm compresses on them if they get lumpy! You are working wonders with these dogs. Well done for giving them another chance!

Re: Fostering Olympic - staffie girl looking for a forever home
Her milk production has stopped now and the swelling is going down well.
The middle pic where she's "heavy" was taken at the start of the month when she first came into the rescue centre from the pound.
Anyhow... I've booked her in to see my vet tomorrow - looks like a few ingrowing eyelashes, so I want to get that sorted asap as it's going to be uncomfortable. I'll get her to check everything else over as well, and see if we can get this skin tag off too as it is quite big and she could catch it and make it bleed.
Now that she's settled into the house and relaxed, she's spent 95% of the day asleep - presumably catching up on lost kip as I imagine, emotionally, she'll be tired from her journey: pups-pound-rescue. Bless her.
I can't begin to understand how she's ended up in a rescue - was she lost/runaway, because I can't see how anyone would chuck her out?

Re: Fostering Olympic - staffie girl looking for a forever home
It's very rewarding, but feels a bit odd, knowing you'll be saying goodbye to them, Gem.
Well, Ollie was a star on walks this afternoon.
A great dane female was off-lead and decided to sniff, prod and bump into little Ollie while her owner caught up.
Ollie was very nice about it and stood relaxed and calm, glancing at me as if to ask if this is the done thing around here.
Vets followed by a walk with a few other dogs tomorrow.

Hmm, she's going back to the rescue this evening as agreed, in time for her lady op next week.
I was only supposed to be fostering her until today but will be trying to make arrangements to sneak her back out on Thursday for another four days.
Do...not...want...to...return...her.

Then ask to keep her. If you feel drawn to her then maybe it's meant to be?

Re: Fostering Olympic - staffie girl looking for a forever home
Wouldn't be fair, Caryll. I've changed my work hours around since Marley passed and they don't fit a full-time doggie any more.
There's a good chance Olympic will be rehomed this week to a lady with some land attached to her house, so fingers crossed for her.
The rescue wants to know if I'll take a Jack Russell in for a short assessment end of next week.
