my new girl is coming home in two weeks, advice please
Hi everyone,
I am the proud owner of my little lad jack who is a 4 year old staffy male, After a bit of a sad start (jacks mother got run down and sadly passed away when he was 4 weeks old). I prior to getting jack i did a lot of reaserch on the breed and also watching ceaser the dog wisperer i basically had a very young little baby on my hands and i just took over and i think even though i say my self did a good job of bringing him up.
I promise you all that after two weeks of coming home with me i had him toilet trained two weeks later (6 weeks old) Because i am home most of the day i could keep my eye on him, so like everyone says every time jack woke up i put him outside in the garden and it just amazed me how much a vulnerable little fella could learn so quickly where to do his wee weeing etc. Again after every meal i would take him outside and he just knew what to do.
My friend is a vet so i did get some supplements from him to aid his growth and strength that at such an early age needed.
From day one i crate trained him and as hard as it was i just let him sleep in his warm and snuggly bed and i love him so much, he has never chewed anything in the house, has i bought him lots of chewies to help him when teething and plenty of toys etc. now hes a big strong boy but such a big softy he is even scared of feathers!!!
Now sorry for the long drawn out story but because jack was such a pleasure to bring up i have now bought a little girl staffy who i have called rosie, and she will be ready to bring home in two weeks (8 weeks old) could you tell me if i use all the knowledge i gained from bringing jack up do you think we will be ok, and what is the best way to introduce a new puppy . thankyou xx peter and jack

sounds like you've already got it sorted How is Jack generally with other dogs, any boisterousness then probably an introduction on lead would be best so you casn tug him back. Personally for me I just let my two get on with it , the Tomminator is the little one and the one that likes to be rough with the old teeth, Tilly is much more tolerant and just enjoys a nice little chew on a paw or attempts to drag him round the garden by his ear.
Obviously never in the early stages leave them unsupervised

thankyou for your kind replies, jack is just a big softie he loves people other animals and other dogs he just wags his tail and wants fussing.. I did go to rescue a 12 month old blue staffy from preston RSPCA he was gorgeous and two weeks previous had been neutered (jack is too) that i arranged a meeting with jack at the rspca, the other dog just kept terrorising my lad and jack just sat next to me at the end cos hed had enough, I went with my gut instinct and did not rehome him has there energy was not compatable.
I trust jack 110% you can do anything to him and he doesnt bother. I have been treated for bowl cancer of which i am recovered and jack has never left my side so last week the first time in 4yrs i wanted him to come and sleep with his daddy (i were just feeling sorry for myself!!) Did i get any sleep NO...... He took all the bed up, snored all night and decided at 3.30 am he was gonna kiss his daddys face all the time so i am afraid he is back sleeping downstairs but he keeps looking at me with those eyes.. you know the type. Having jack i truly belive has kept me going, and one of my nurses told me there is such a thing called pet therapy and it works.
Anyway i am going to pick the little girl up early in the morning when shes due to come home and i will just let them get to know each other but obviously always be there to keep a check on them, I really would not consider bringing a baby home if i wasnt 100% sure it is not worth it.

Hi and welcome!
Doesn't sound like you've done badly but there is always more to learn however much you know IMO!
As you mentioned Cesar, I'm guessing you use aversives, and as I've learnt, there are much better ways to train and raise a dog. I would recommend you get hold of a copy of The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson. Also Don't Shoot The Dog by Karen Pryor and Life Skills For Puppies by Helen Zulch & Daniel Mills is a good one for raising pups.
The puppy plan contains lots of good info on socialisation - http://www.thepuppyplan.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/PP_Brochure_Owners_07_LO.pdf
Plus Ian Dunbar has two books you can get free online and although he's a bit dramatic, there's some good stuff in them - http://www.dogstardaily.com/files/downloads/BEFORE_You_Get_Your_Puppy.pdf
And - http://www.dogstardaily.com/files/downloads/AFTER_You_Get_Your_Puppy.pdf

Hi and welcome from us and Suki. If you could introduce them ahead of time it would help. Also if you can get something with the scent of the new pup on it to bring home that would also be good.

Agree with J in fact I think it was J that gave me the advice so we took a blanky from Tilly to the breeder to give to Tommy and vice versa,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and well we've had Tommy for over 2 months now and they are both still alive

Re: my new girl is coming home in two weeks, advice please
Thankyou all once again for your advice and kind words, Do you know i cant sleep because im like a kid at xmas.
One question for everyone, my jack whos 4 seems to be malting really bad this year and ive also noticed his skin is a little dry so first of all being a hairdressing lecturer i did some research on shampoos and basically all that shampoos are are detergents, which will strip the skin of its natural oils (sebum, from the sebaceous glands on the skin) so i switched jacks vet shampoo 2 weeks ago and used ordinary baby shampoo (no tears one) and his skin has improved 90%, also i have been giving him twice daily milk and a raw egg along with a cod liver oil capsule (that he hates). You may think im crazy but i also gave him an all over indian head and body massage using only the organic and 100% natural oils and he is partial to (1 drop only) lavender pure essential oil. and he is gleeming. x

How often are you bathing him? The change of shampoo will help but they really don't need a bath very often. We only bathe Suki when she is really stinky or happens to roll in poo.
We do give her a rub down with a damp cloth when she gets a little dirty.

What food do you feed? That can make a huge difference to skin.
Cod liver oil isn't recommended for dogs in large doses or as a long term thing due to the high vitamin A content which can be toxic. A fish boy oil is better

OH my god i didnt know that about cod liver oil, i only give him one capsule a day, but now i will only give it him every other day because it really has helped him.
i only bath him about every 6 months or so.. Ive been to see my new puppy today rosie and shes so cute i just want to take her home (even though i wouldnt cos shes only just over 5 weeks old) i must say that the breeder told me she can only leave after she turns 8 weeks... i am glad i have got her from someone who knows what they are doing..
hope everyone are ok.. peter
