Adaptil collar/hormone neutering
Hi just wandering if anyone has used an adaptil collar?den is of to kennels for a week soon and the vet has recommended this collar to chill him out as he's a bit hyper.apparently it's a plastic thin collar that fits tightly around the neck and reacts with body heat to release hormones which a bitch releases which has a calming effect on dogs?also I was asking her about his aggressive behaviour which is getting worse but I don't want to neuter for several reasons.she recommended hormone implants which then can be removed instead of surgically removing the testicals with no adverse affects.has anyone used this method?thanks in advance, lindz

Re: Adaptil collar/hormone neutering
I personally wouldn't use a tight collar at any time, let alone in kennels. Too many opportunities for accidents. I've known several people who have used the implants, with various degrees of success. They can't be removed, but wear off after a few months. Have you spoken to the kennels to see what they sugest?

Re: Adaptil collar/hormone neutering
Rocky had an adaptil collar on when we collected him from the rescue centre. He didn't fit expecially tightly just as a normal collar would.
We now have the adaptil spray which we use during fireworks or on long car journeys. It does work to calm him down as he is a bit hyper when in the car. During fireworks we spray it onto the bedding where he sleeps. Just spray it on about 10 minutes before he goes there.

Ledger had an adaptil collar when he was in the rescue centre and due to a new fear of being in the car I bought the spray and it does calm him he actually lies down for some of the journey

Re: Adaptil collar/hormone neutering
I've not spoken to them yet caryll but I will do.he's spent a night in them before and he was fine but the difference is he was fine with dogs then and now he's not that's my main concern.the dogs don't get mixed they are exercised separately but I just think he will spend the whole time up a height whilst being in for a week.thanks kathytake2 swell I'll get some spray before he goes in and leave it with the kennels

This is quite a good price for it, but by all means have a look around yourself too:

Re: Adaptil collar/hormone neutering
When i worked in kennels and we had a dog that was dog agro, we would put them at the very back and take them out the fire exit so they would never go past the other dogs.

Re: Adaptil collar/hormone neutering
Thanks for the replys, the kennel says he will be fine they have a lot of experience with bull terriers, they said the adaptil collar is a personal choice but he will be ok either way,so I think I'll just use the spray

Re: Adaptil collar/hormone neutering
I've tried using dap collars and plug ins with the rescue dogs that I work with, but sadly have noticed no real effects. However, this could be due to the level of stress that they are under, living in kennels full time. Might be a little more effective in a quieter boarding kennels or home environment.
With regards to neutering for behavioural reasons, if your dog is KC reg and you are planning on breeding or not neutering for other reasons simply say that you don't want to neuter. There have been varied reports of neutering helping to calm a dog in some instances but the behaviour will not improve without training. And you're right, it will only get worse until you target it head on. Perhaps ask your vet to recommend a behavioural practitioner rather than a medical procedure and see how you get on

Re: Adaptil collar/hormone neutering
Has anyone tried the Adaptil diffuser for their dogs concerning fireworks.
Lola is terrified and just sits shaking and wondered if they work?
