My puppy keeps whining!! Empty My puppy keeps whining!!

Post by pepper12 Wed Aug 15 2012, 09:16

Hi.... I just recently bought an 8 week old staffordshire bullterrier and I know there is a process to where the puppy needs to adjust but wanted to know if there is a tim frame of how long a puppy takes to adjust with having to be alone at times by itself? During the day when my partner and myself are at work we obviously cannot be with our puppy 4 out of the 5 weekdays and i know once we leave at times during the day she will sook cause they crave human affection and attention more so than other breeds and also at night while we are sleeping we keep her in our double garage inside a puppy pen with pillow, blankets, food and toys but we are still getting woken up at least 6 times a night to her sooking and whining?? I know this is to be expected as we take her outside to pee etc but does anybody know how long it will take for her to adjust to sooking less as i know every puppy is different but just an approx is fine?
we give her heaps of attention when we are at home but do not want her being an inside dog (only when she needs to be). Also when we are home during the day we want her to get used to being outdoors so when the time comes I want to be able to leave her outside when we are at work but not yet cause I dont want anybody climbing my fence and stealing her.
I refuse to have her in my bed at night which I have read on this forum as I find that disgusting, there must be other ways and any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated....She is great in every way and toilet training is going well, shes eating well, even likes being trained on her lead...just info regarding staffies sooking and how long this can be expected to last is apreciated!!! Smile

How long is a piece of string...

When she is crying do you go to her every time? They quickly learn how to get attention when they want it. As harsh as it sounds you need to ignore it. How noisy is the garage at night? If there are noises she can't see (cars going past, people with other dogs, cats, foxes) then she might be getting anxious and scared.

Hi and welcome from us and Suki. They are all different in how long it takes them to adjust. Leaving the radio on is a good idea. You may also want to leave an article of clothing with your scent on it to help reassure her.

hi and welcome to the forum
its hard to know how long this whining will go on as all pups are differant but at 8 weeks a pups still pining for littermates and mother not just settling in .
i know not every one so lucky to be able to get time off work but iv always or wife taken 2/3 weeks off work when first getting a pup so to get rid of the pining for littermates and mother (well not as bad).
so we are just left with the settling in.
re the settling in apart from the times you need to take them out to do there buissness you need to turn a deaf ear the rest of the time and they will soon learn it gets them nowhere and will stop.(sure your neighbours wont mind to much lol)
thumbs up hopfully you will go through this stage quickly .

PS

shame on you only thing i will say in your opening thread you found it DISGUSTING that members let there dogs sleep in there bed .
we are not judgmental on this forum so please keep them views to yourself lol as you dont want to get off on the wrong foot (there will be tons of members that would never leave there dog outside full time but will not judge you for it)

hi and welcome

is there any way you would allow the puppy to stay in the crate with a cover over it in your room if you won't let him in your bed? we have ours in a crate in the same room as us when we sleep, and she only whined the first night. otherwise, i work from home so haven't had the whining during the day.

Also, maybe it would be a good idea when you are home with him to work on separation anxiety. put him in the crate and walk away for a minute, then do it again and again, then build up to 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10, 20, etc. don't forget to praise and reward when you return and he's nice and quiet. do this until he's well and truly happy with the crate. seems cruel to just let them whine, but it has to be done and with that method they will just get used to it and they appreciate the crate and you more. putting a cover over the crate for sleeping helps with the denning instinct, too - they like to be all tucked in Love Struck

good luck

Hello and welcome from me and the kids Big Grin

As everyone says , how long is a piece of string ??? Both of our dogs are inside dogs (and sorry but yes they do sleep on our beds Blushing ) so a bit more difficult to judge in attitude, environment and timing . Both were crate trained for their early days, Tilly was settled inside of a week , Tommy took 2-3 weeks of patience and now they both sleep until 6am without problems
