Getting my pup confident when going out on walkies
Hello all
Just wanting some advice for my lil pup Eric, He's in the process of getting used to his lead, even though it makes him physically shake just putting it on We praise him and make him feel comfortable but hes very nervous when out.
The furthest i have got is almost round the block, he sits alot and naturally is nervous when cars go past. This morning some neighbours dogs in the yard were barking like crazy and he wouldnt budge.... I know it takes time to get used to it for him but just wanting some tips on walkies please

It takes them a bit of time to adjust as the world is new to them. Try taking treats or a favorite toy as a motivaror. Go slow and let him discover the world at his own pace.

Patience & perseverance.
If he's scared, don't sympathise as that'll make him think he's right to be scared, just act like everything's normal & as it should be. Take plenty of treats with you & if he stops or looks scared, just stand still & call him to you with a treat. As he gets to you, give him the treat & carry on walking, maybe holding another treat just beyond his reach. It's a big, frightening world out there, and it takes some pups longer than others to accept that there's nothing to worry about.

Try taking a favourite toy or some treats out with you on walks to encourage him out. Do you have any friends with a well socialised/quiet dog who you could walk with ?
Talk to him with a silly voice when you are out, I've always found this can help.

Let him drag and play with the lead indoors so he dosent always associate the lead with feeling scared, he will get used to the lead quicker and realise that 'nothing bad happens with this long thing on me'
My pup froze when I put the lead on him the first time, after a few days he was used to it and now loves his walks.

i would suggest take him to places where he will get lots of fuss, this worked with Alfie he loves going out for walks now and remembers the places he has had fuss and always stops when we get there looking for the person that fussed him last time.
