Dry skin and itching
Loki is looking very mottled at the moment. She is constantly scratching and has a really dry skin. We have had her to the vet for them to check for allergies and mange. Clear on both. The vet told us that the scratching is due to the dryness of the skin. We have had a lot of rain for the last 2 months, and they get wet and dry which feels like its never-ending.
I have tried some aloe gel, tinned fish with oil, a supplement of oil for the skin, different shampoos etc. Nothing seems to work.
She has fleas, not for lack of treatment, but the vet said that because her skin is so dry it doesn't absorb the flea treatment to an extent where it works like it should. I also know that some dogs gets an allergic reaction to flea bites.
My problem is getting her skin in a good condition. It all seems to be a vicious circle, because I know the fleas could be causing the itching, but the treatment is not working because her skin is dry, and the oils don't seem to be doing what they're supposed to for her skin.
Never had problems like this with Maksa. They eat the same food (puppy and adult), his coat is shiny and he never scratches.
Any advice will help

Re: Dry skin and itching
The diet you feed your dogs sounds like it suits one but not the other.
For example ppl rave about fish4dogs and how good it is etc, but it dont suit my boy Mayja, he gets a very dry scurvy coat on this diet, but on CSJ is fine.
Over bathing a dog can also cause a dry coat too.

Re: Dry skin and itching
I might try changing her diet, maybe that helps.
I don't over bathe. I bath them once a month, maybe twice when they're filthy, but never more than that. But then again, with it raining so much and them getting wet and dry constantly, it could be that the natural oil in her skin doesn't get a chance to "form".
I don't know, just feel sorry for her having to scratch so much

Re: Dry skin and itching
You can try a flea spray to get rid of the fleas for now & once everything's back to normal go back to the spot on.
I add salmon oil to Dempsey's food & that seems to keep his coat good.

Rain in its self should'nt be a problem, its the shampoo thats the culprit of washing out a dogs coats natural oils.
Mine are bathed once a year, unless they find something nasty to roll in.

I'm having the same problem with Zeus now.. for the past week especially hes been biting his skin alot, everywhere, and last night, he did it to the point where he start bleeding. I put Sudocrem on all the problem areas which seems to have calmed it down but hes still biting. Im guessing its his food (wainwrights), so I'm going to order some fish4dogs and see how he gets on!

Re: Dry skin and itching
The wheat content of some foods can often be the culprit for sensitive skin. Do you add any oils to his diet?

Re: Dry skin and itching
Skye has very dry skin and I use camrosa ointment which although it does get everywhere it works wonders
I also changed her food to Davies which has no wheat in it

Re: Dry skin and itching
Wainwrights is a good midrange food, I feed my two on it but they also have daily salmon oil, vitamin e capsule.
Once a week raw beef bone and once a week sardines and raw egg.
I bath mine roughly every 4-6 wks. Today I bathed Tank and omg the water was dark brown off him lmao ! But I didn't bath Diesel, just cleaned her ears as Tank chews them! Too much bathing strips the skin of it's natural oils.
If u feed Wainwrights hypoallergenic then I reckon adding salmon oil or yumega oil daily will help.
(mine also get a Sunday roast with all the trimmings lol) !
