Nala's Poo Problem.
Hi all ! this is my first post as i am new to the site. For the last 2 months or so we have been catching Nala our 6 month old staffy eating her poo . She is fully toilet trained and we were told as a result of this that that is the reason she eats her poo. (so we wont tell her off for pooing in the garage ) . We have tried a number of things. spinach , pumpkin , pineapple and nothing seems to work. We feed her a premium hollistic brand of dry food plus raw kangaroo meat so she is definately getting all her nutrients. hoping someone out there can give us some helpful tips or info ! .

Re: Nala's Poo Problem.
The fact that she is fully toilet trained has no bearing on her eating her poop. Whoever told you that? Neither of my dogs ever ate their poop, not even when they were toilet trained.
Have you changed food in the last two months? We don't have a great selection of foods in SA, but I know some of them have a lower absorbtions rate than others, which could result in dogs eating their poop, as the body craves more nutrients. I know you said she is on a hollistic brand. Also, when did you start including the kangaroo meat?

Re: Nala's Poo Problem.
hi Chantel . we have been giving her kangaroo meat since she was about 9 weeks old. the brand that we feed her is called black hawk wich alot of sbt breeders swear by. 3 vets have all told us the same thing. she has been on the same diet since she was 9 weeks old. we never changed her food. its such an embarassing habit ! . apparently it is a very common problem. but what works for most other dogs dosnt work for mine lol shes strange

Re: Nala's Poo Problem.
The pineapple as a food additive normally works. Could you just watch her closely and pick it up before she can eat it.

Re: Nala's Poo Problem.
hi jstaff i wish it worked !!!! it worked for about a week then she went at it again. we generally do pick up straight after but we are not always around to do that so she does get away with it . i also wanted to ask if anyone knew it says sbt are 41 cm tall. nala is currently 44 cm . will she grow much taller or do they generally stop at 6 months old?

Re: Nala's Poo Problem.
Did you stop feeding pineapple or did she simply outgrow her aversion to the effects?
In general they grow upwards for the first year and than out for the next two.

Re: Nala's Poo Problem.
I've had the exact same problem with Zeus... ever since we got him, he'd eat his poo. He's got a bit better over time, if he knows we're around, he won't go near it. The problem is when we're not around, we can't leave him by himself unless we know hes already had a poo.
Like you, we've tried everything.. pineapple, charcoal biscuits and something called 'stool repel', which supposedly stops them from doing it. But had no luck.
I think the only way to get it out of them is to tell them off when they're doing it, hopefully they get the message and grow out of it..

Re: Nala's Poo Problem.
A good LEAVE command should also be used and practiced regularly even when just playing with toys use the leave command.

Re: Nala's Poo Problem.
Hi & welcome.
As others have said, the "leave" command is worth getting in really strong. I've had 5 different breeds of dogs over the years, and believe me, poo eating isn't just a staffy trait!! She may just grow out of it, I think you'll have to keep your fingers crossed!
Has she had a season yet? If not, I would personally wait till 3 months after her first season to help her mature properly. As she is already wary of people, early neutering could make that worse & lead to nervous aggression.
Irish Staffs? They're basically crossbreeds bred to look like pitbulls, or pitbulls that are called Irish Staffs so that people think they're a different breed!

Re: Nala's Poo Problem.
Thank everybody for your responses. My husband has imported this powder from the states called for -bid . Have been using it for a week as directed and it seems to be working . Hopefully she will continue not to eat her poo . Just got her spayed on friday we went to pick her up from the vet and it was as if she didn't have the operation she was going crazy and excited as usual .
