Some people are unbelievable
Would you, in all honesty, play stick fetch with a dog with poor recall, off the lead, next to a road?
Was walking the foster dog around 6pm tonight when we came to the road. Foster is on a lead.
Large golden retriever on the other side of the road, on a small patch of green, running up and down for a tennis ball, isn't.
Retriever sees foster, handler calls retriever, retriever ignores handler and belts across the road.
Car is, of course, coming.
I'm waving my arms and shouting "woah woah" at the top of my voice at the car driver, who stops, literally, within a few inches of this retriever, which then pounces on the foster dog and won't be called off.
Handler ambles over slowly, slaps retriever, then walks back across the road.
Seemed to be utterly oblivious to the fact her dog was inches away from the Rainbow Bridge.
I didn't say a word throughout as my jaw was on the floor and my tongue hanging out somewhere near my ankles.
Places not to play fetch - beside a road.

Experienced this before aswell! At night when it was dark and Bailey was about 4months, walking down to the park and a overly fat black lab runs across the main road from the park straight over to us, I never even seen it till the last moment and thought it was a rottie, so Bailey was lifted by his harness that was a lucky dog that night that nothing hit it!

I HATE that it is one of my most hated hates. There is a GSD in the town and the owner is always pushing a buggy along without a care in the world and the number of times that dog has near been hit is insane. I am nearly going to phone the USPCA on her but 1) i dont know her name 2) they wouldn't do anything anyway cause they only do something if it gets them in the papers

This is something I am always fearful of when driving near parks and/or houses. You just never know when a dog could come running out, just as with a small child really they have no fear of the road and you have to think for them.
Quite irresponsible of the owner to allow the dog on the road.

It is baffling the things some people do.
Blue has no road sense what so ever. Some dogs are better than others, but I wouldn't even risk it with the most savy dog

There is no explaining away some people's stupidity. Thank goodness angels try very hard to keep our animals safe inspite of all the handicaps they are faced with.

Horrible glad the car stopped in time. When we took my old dog, Zac, to the park/field, we would let him off near a road (not right near it, but it was within sight), but he never had any interest in going near it, and we were 100% sure he'd come right back to us if he'd go further than we wanted. I'm not letting Loki off the lead at all until I know he'll come back to me even when there are distractions around. Maybe that's paranoia, but hey, have to trust a dog before you let him run off around things that can hurt him.

I hate this! And tonight, on our walk, we saw a staff next to one of the busiest roads around here, it was on lead, but who was the handler? A NINE YEAR OLD girl! I was disgusted. Just her, her friend who looked oven younger and the dog. My mind boggles. I dread to think what could have happened if a DA dog approached them or a dog out of control off the lead
Some people just do not think!

shocking, some people don't think sometimes until the worst happens which is a real shame.

Re: Some people are unbelievable
There are a lot of people walk there dogs here off lead and its right beside a main road which often has drivers speeding along it and its a main route for fire brigade/ambulances. My two are only off lead in an enclosed area because I know Millie's recall is terrible. I wouldn't take the chance of her running on the road or over to people or animals.

Re: Some people are unbelievable
no dog should ever be off lead near a road regardless of whether ther recall is perfect or no, all it takes is for the dog to be startled by a banging cart door a car backfire or something and there is a big problem immediately and it's not just the dog that might get hurt

Re: Some people are unbelievable
i was at our local park on sunday with my two dogs (both on the lead) when a labrador come over off the lead started growling and snarling at smudge and debo. so my two returned the gesture while pulling on there leads. it took the owner forever to come and get his dog and then persisted to tell me that my dogs were the ones at fault. so i told him to get his dog on its lead and not to have it off until it listens to you 100%. hate owners who havn't got a clue

Here here!!
Can't agree more after having gone thru a fairly similar incident recently where a dog was out of control off a lead on a fairly busy public road, which then ran out into road, then proceeded to run across the road and literally jump on top of my dog, who was firmly on a lead!!! I then got the cheeky wrath of it's owner who proceeded to have a go at "me" just because my dog told his off!
Give me strength!!!

Re: Some people are unbelievable
madness , obviously doesnt love the dog enough ...you wouldnt let a young child play near a road as they have no danger awareness so why let a dog that can be distracted or spooked
