Excitable nipping
Hi Guys,
Got a quick question and that is when Bruno gets really excited he nipps, he has never nipped me or any of the family but other dogs and not aggressively in a playing kind of way. But i'm starting to get a bit worried, my dog walker has suggested a muzzle to get him out of this just wanted to know your thoughts. I'm taking him through more training even tho this is his main issue any advise would be great.
Thank you
Pauline xx

Re: Excitable nipping
Personally I wouldn't muzzle him. He's a puppy and he's doing what puppies do. They need to learn their bite inhibition with other dogs. He's obviously learnt that when playing nipping is not acceptable with you he just needs to know that it's not acceptable with other dogs.
Do you have any friends with older dogs that he could socialise with? Obi has 4 staffie friends and he's already learnt with Roxy (3 year old) that if wants her to play nipping is not how it's done. With his friend Rusty (6 year old) he's had 3 play dates now (over 2 weeks) and Rusty only told him on their last play date that he'd had enough of the nipping. Just hope Obi remembers lol.
As I said this is just my personal opinion i'm sure there will be more knowledgeble people who can help

Re: Excitable nipping
I really didn't want to muzzle him. The nipping is only now and again. And it is when he is really excited. He's 12 months old but my sister has a 7 month old jack Russell. Who nipps him all the time. But i can't seem to train the jack russell x

Re: Excitable nipping
12 months old I thought he was younger lol Obi is only 12 weeks. I've never had a dog to nip at that age so I don't have an answer on that one i'm afraid.
I'm sure there is someone here who must have experience or knows what to do.
Good luck

Re: Excitable nipping
I would ask the same question as Caryll. I definately wouldn't muzzle him.

Re: Excitable nipping
I have not seen it first hand so I'm unsure. Its just what my dog walker has said. He has never nipped the jack russel or my mams older dog tho. Muzzeling him seemed extrem. Taking him 2 a dog trainer 2morro so I hope he can help. But it does seem when he gets 2 excited that it happens or when she has about 9-10 dogs xxx

Re: Excitable nipping
It could be just part of the socialization process. Perhaps he needs to be around fewer dogs and build up from there? Hard to say really since you haven't seen the behaviour.

Re: Excitable nipping
Thank you. That is what I thought coz in a smaller group she has never had no problems and its not all the time. But with him now being 12 months I was getting a bit concerned. X

If your dog walker is trying to handle 9 or 10 dogs at a time, I'd get another dog walker. That's way too many & she can't possibly be in control of so many dogs!

Wow yeah I agree! Imagine all that excited energy trapped at the end of the lead! It's pack mentality overdrive! I'm suprised it hasn't blown up in that walkers face....an accident waiting to happen IMO.
I personally wouldn't muzzle my dog unless I knew full well it has the intent and capability of hurting another living creature. And I think 12 months is too young to justify that kinda label, which a muzzle implies to me, for a dog. Excitedness and lack of manners doesn't equal aggression as I have found out. Just my 2 pennies worth.
