Advice for an excitable Staffie?
Hi everyone. Wondering if anyone has any advice for me. A few months ago we adopted a 1yr old Staffie, Eve. She's absolutely lovely and calm at home, spends most of her time cuddling or lying on her cushions as she doesn't have much energy (she does go for runs in the garden and long walks though). My problem is when she meets new people she gets ridiculously excited, jumping and licking for about half an hour after she meets someone new. It's got to the point where people avoid coming over because she just gets exhausting. A few friends that also have staffies have told me this is a very staffie thing. Any advice on how to keep her calm when she meets people?

Re: Advice for an excitable Staffie?
Right now we tell people to completely ignore her (which is difficult when she's jumping!) until she calms down, then reward her. This has worked somewhat and she's much better than she was at first, but it's still rather ridiculous

Re: Advice for an excitable Staffie?
In situations like this i always look at what victoria stilwell does.
She won't open the door until the dog is calm (so get a very patient friend to come over) and make her sit and wait and as soon as she obeys treat her, but stay calm. keep this up until she is sitting waiting patiently then open the door a crack. If she gets up at all shut the door and begin again. Keep it up until you have your friend in the living room (or wherever you sit) and continue to ask them to ignore her, and if she starts getting very excited when they are in the social room, remove her until she is calm then reintroduce her (with your saint like friend still ignoring her) and repeat until she basically is bored of the whole thing and is not bothered about your friend!
Your friends might want to say hello to her but keep this ignore and remove the excitment until she is calm enough to come up to someone and say hello then go her own way.
Good luck

I would do the same as Hayley has suggested.
You can also put them on a lead when you have guests to make it easier to correct her and to stop her getting to the guest to jump on them.

Excellent advice. You can also have people come over as often as possible so she has a chance to get used to it.

Excellent advice!
You could also reinforce this by not letting her greet you and members of the household in an excited manner

You could also try to make sure she has all four feet on the floor when meeting guests. This is something we still have a problem with Rocky doing, just please try to be persisitent.

Re: Advice for an excitable Staffie?
same problem here, but Jellybean is getting much better because we are ignoring her until she calms down. we have taught her "calm" because when we do reward her for calming down, we work in the word calm as her cue as well. if we have advance notice of someone coming in the house, even my husband or step-kids, she goes into her crate not as a punishment just sort of as a regular thing we do anyway so she doesn't think she's been naughty. she doesn't get to come out until she's calm. even then she still gets very waggy and licky, and maybe jumps, but it's getting less and less each time. as with all the good advice here, it just takes time.
good luck!!
good luck!!
