Calling ALL staffy owners or breeders - please help me
My name is Holly and I am currently doing a small dissertation type thing on whether aggression in dogs is caused by breed or upbringing. I am concentrating a lot on Staffordshire bull terriers as they have been in the media a lot due to dog attacks etc, however my own experience with them has been nothing but positive. I was wondering whether anyone would be able to fill out my questionnaire for me? If so, please find the questionnaires a couple of posts down
Thank you so much
Thank you so much

Breeder questionnaire:
What attracted you to breeding staffies originally?
Have you ever had any dogs which you have been unable to sell due to temperament?
Would you ever refuse to sell one of your puppies to a potential buyer? If so, what would put you off a buyer?
What are the reasons people usually present to you for buying a Staffie?
Have you ever experienced behavioural problems with a litter? Or individual?
What training methods have you used with your dogs, if any?
Do you feel it is necessary to house/people break them in?
PS. If there are any questions that you do not want to answer, just leave them blank

I'm not a breeder so can't answer these but I just wanted to say that I decided not to breed my dog because she is dog aggressive (which is down to my poor socialisation as she will get on with some dogs but it's random!)

What breed is your dog? Staffordshire bull terrier
How old is your dog? 2ish
Where did you purchase your dog? Liverpool Dog Rescue
For what reason did you choose the breed you chose? Staffies get a really bad press but they are lovely dogs full of character. There are so many in the rescues centres and even more that get pts.
What training method (if any) did you use? Eg. Reward based training, clicker based training, reward and punishment training etc.. Postive training using treats and some clicker training
Do you have a record of the ancesters of your dog? If so, where they family dogs, fighting dogs, working dogs etc?
No history, what you see is what you get.
Have you experienced any difficulties in the training of you dog? Not at all, bright as a button.
Do you ever avoid certain situations (for example, avoid smaller dogs) due to your dogs own behaviour? Not really, but I do avoid owners that can't control their dogs of any breed.
Has your dog ever got into any fights? Yes but not instigated by my dog.
Does your dog get possessive over food? No, I can do aything with her food, take it away, add more, stand and stroke her - she is happy with all of this.

What breed is your dog?
Staffy
How old is your dog?
3
Where did you purchase your dog?
Dogs Trust
For what reason did you choose the breed you chose?
Prior research into breed, based decision on size/strength that I could handle then also matched at Dogs Trust
What training method (if any) did you use? Eg. Reward based training, clicker based training, reward and punishment training etc..
Reward Based
Do you have a record of the ancesters of your dog? If so, where they family dogs, fighting dogs, working dogs etc?
No even his previous rescue history had been lost as the centre had moved buildings
Have you experienced any difficulties in the training of you dog?
He is anxious the classes we went to were in a barn and on a windy day he would just shake and bark but one to one in the home/park he has been ok. As my first dog I am still learning but we are getting there
Do you ever avoid certain situations (for example, avoid smaller dogs) due to your dogs own behaviour?
There are specific dogs that I avoid as he is nervous particularly if the other dog is out of control (i.e. dragging its owner for a walk)
Has your dog ever got into any fights?
Only momentarily when off lead dogs have approached and are aggressive towards him but he does listen to me
Does your dog get possessive over food?
No

Re: Calling ALL staffy owners or breeders - please help me
What breed is your dog? Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
How old is your dog? 18 months.
Where did you purchase your dog? Stafford.
For what reason did you choose the breed you chose? Temprement, good looking dogs, medium sized, not too big, not too small, no negatives about the breed other than a lot of bad owners.
What training method (if any) did you use? Eg. Reward based training, clicker based training, reward and punishment training etc.. Reward based.
Do you have a record of the ancesters of your dog? If so, where they family dogs, fighting dogs, working dogs etc? No.
Have you experienced any difficulties in the training of you dog? other than being extremely excitable with new people and dogs nope.
Do you ever avoid certain situations (for example, avoid smaller dogs) due to your dogs own behaviour? None, she plays with a chiwawa most days.
Has your dog ever got into any fights? Not a fight as such, but a little dog was constantly nipping her while she was playing with some other dogs for about an hour, eventually the dog caught her side and actually left a fairly decent gash of about 8" in length, she turned round and pinned the dog to the floor by its throat for a few seconds then let it go, didn't harm it at all.
Does your dog get possessive over food? Not in the slightest, my 2 year old son takes food out of her mouth with no issue at all.

Re: Calling ALL staffy owners or breeders - please help me
What breed is your dog?
Staff / Victorian bulldog X (apparently, staff is definite)
How old is your dog?
10 months
Where did you purchase your dog?
She and another were rescued from a not so friendly owner.
For what reason did you choose the breed you chose?
I love the staff breed as I remember a friend having one when I was growing up, never known another breed like it, I would of rescued these dogs regardless, but wouldnt of kept one if it wasnt a staffy, my mum has the other staff x, and they remain good friends now
What training method (if any) did you use? Eg. Reward based training, clicker based training, reward and punishment training etc..
reward based training learned at puppy classes, A firm No if she does something bad, then ignore her, but nothing more as I wouldnt want her scared of me!
Do you have a record of the ancesters of your dog? If so, where they family dogs, fighting dogs, working dogs etc?
No history, only what I was told, but dont take it as gospel.
Have you experienced any difficulties in the training of you dog?
Honestly, she amazed me, learned so quickly, our biggest struggles were / are over excitement when people come to visit, occassional lapse in recall.
Do you ever avoid certain situations (for example, avoid smaller dogs) due to your dogs own behaviour?
Yes, being young, my dog will sometimes have too much energy for other dogs to play with, and more so with older dogs, my mum has a 14 year old lab, she is too much for him, he often growls at her to "back off" but will happily sniff her butt when she's not looking lol
regular dog walkers we see at the local park know our dog, and we all know which dogs play well together, and which dont, there are a few westies in our area, she loves playing with them as they are energetic themselves.
If my dog wants to say hello to another who we dont know, I always ask the other dogs owner if there dog is friendly
Has your dog ever got into any fights?
No, if another dog growls, or shows any aggression regardless of its size she either goes submissive, or ignore it as if to say "whatever" ...
Does your dog get possessive over food?[b]
nope, always made a point of taking her food away when we want, playing with her and her food when she is eating, pulling her tail, doing whatever she wants so it never becomes an issue.

Re: Calling ALL staffy owners or breeders - please help me
Owners questionnaire:
What breed is your dog? Staffordshire Bull Terrier
How old is your dog? 9 1/2, almost 10 months
Where did you purchase your dog? From the breeder at 6 months
For what reason did you choose the breed you chose? Good with children and not too big
What training method (if any) did you use? Eg. Reward based training, clicker based training, reward and punishment training etc.. Reward
Do you have a record of the ancesters of your dog? If so, where they family dogs, fighting dogs, working dogs etc? No
Have you experienced any difficulties in the training of you dog? Due to lack of socialisation while he was young he gets very excitable around new people and dogs. His recall with other dogs around isn't very good as he would rather go and play. He is getting better every day, but he is kept on a long line for now.
Do you ever avoid certain situations (for example, avoid smaller dogs) due to your dogs own behaviour? No, but he is kept on a shorter line around old dogs as I don't want him to jump up and cause injury.
Has your dog ever got into any fights? No, despite the number of various other breeds that have snapped and snarled and the cocker spaniel that pinned him to the floor snarling in his face!
Does your dog get possessive over food? Never. I have two young children (5 & 2). Both of them can take food from him, and play with his food bowl, as can my partner, and I. We also have a small breed dog and she can also take food from him with no problems.

Owners questionnaire:
What breed is your dog? Siberian Husky cross Staffordshire Bull Terrier
How old is your dog? 11 months
Where did you purchase your dog? Richmond
For what reason did you choose the breed you chose? I love Staffs and Huskies, when I found out about staffsky's my interest was pricked
What training method (if any) did you use? Eg. Reward based training, clicker based training, reward and punishment training etc.. Treat reward for a start and then for certain tasks like sit and come I moved to praise and making a fuss. punishment, to show im not pleased with current behaviour "point and say no" or loud hiss if he's really not listening (works well) I always use one word commands and never use his name before or after the command, I use his name for his attention only or for praise. I've used the naughty step method once when he was constantly trying to chew the stair carpets up, this involved 60 seconds in the toilet on his own lol. for a dog its a pretty boring place to be and he hasnt chewed the stairs since.
Do you have a record of the ancesters of your dog? If so, where they family dogs, fighting dogs, working dogs etc?
His parents are both owned by the same person, his dad is a the husky and his mum a Blue staff. they are family pets but both do weight pull. I also know his grandfather was a red husky
Have you experienced any difficulties in the training of you dog? since he started cocking his leg and maturing his recall took a big tumble and is something I am still working on. He has to stay on a flexi lead during walks in woods etc
Do you ever avoid certain situations (for example, avoid smaller dogs) due to your dogs own behaviour?
Never, he's fine with any dog or person.
Has your dog ever got into any fights?
he got bitten on muzzel by a GSD and pinned to the floor. he did have a go back but made no contact. it was his own fault and mine for being to slow to react. he met the dog for the first time and postured in an authoritive way to a dog 3 times his size and stood firm. I saw the GSD wasnt impressed and was just thinking about spinning marley around so the GSD could have sniff when it struck. I asked the other owner to stay which she did so the dogs could sit and look at each other. 4 months later they take a nightly stroll together around the park
Does your dog get possessive over food? he used to be, he snapped at Laska when she first arrived. it's the only time I've ever shouted at him. he will let her eat from his bowl now so its usually me pulling her away to her own food bowl

Re: Calling ALL staffy owners or breeders - please help me
What breed is your dog?
Staffordshire Bull Terrier (may have some Labrador in there)
How old is your dog?
5 1/2 months
Where did you purchase your dog?
From a friend
For what reason did you choose the breed you chose?
Loyalty, friendliness, intelligence and less likely to bark a lot. And they have the best smiles!
What training method (if any) did you use? Eg. Reward based training, clicker based training, reward and punishment training etc.
Reward, clicker and a bit of punishment if needed - never hitting or physical, though
Do you have a record of the ancesters of your dog? If so, where they family dogs, fighting dogs, working dogs etc?
No records
Have you experienced any difficulties in the training of you dog?
Nothing out of the ordinary - raising a puppy of any kind is difficult!
Do you ever avoid certain situations (for example, avoid smaller dogs) due to your dogs own behaviour?
Not really, unless it's because we're training her specifically at the time and don't want her distracted. Sometimes the distraction is part of the training
Has your dog ever got into any fights?
Nope - she has been snarled at/bitten, but has never snarled back or bitten or initiated. She is mostly submissive, even to small dogs
Does your dog get possessive over food?
Excited yes - possessive no. She may drag something she really likes off to start in on chewing it like a bone or what have you, but isn't gone for long and doesn't get upset if we take it off her.

Where did you purchase your dog?got Archie & Skye from Friends ,Ollie from breeder ,other 3 are from Archie and Skye.
For what reason did you choose the breed you chose?brother in law had Staffie and when chance of a pup from him came then we jumped at it. The rest just followed on.
WhQat training method (if any) did you use? Eg. Reward based training, clicker based training, reward and punishment training etc..
all been to our local dog club for training ,but still act like nutters at times
Do you have a record of the ancesters of your dog? If so, where they family dogs, fighting dogs, working dogs etc?
Hard to tell Archies dad came from someone who shows dogs ( he has a wonky tooth so was not wanted) rest are from show dogs.
Have you experienced any difficulties in the training of you dog? Only minor problems with the 3 little ones due to them learning and passing bad habits together.
Do you ever avoid certain situations (for example, avoid smaller dogs) due to your dogs own behaviour?always keep mine on leads in public ,have 30 fot training leads for long walks ,the park etc, not due to problems with my dogs just the fact that if anything did happen then mine would probably get the blame due to breed.
Has your dog ever got into any fights? We had a couple between 2 of ours a while back .
Does your dog get possessive over food? Only Skye the others know to leave her alone when feeding.

Owners questionnaire:
What breed is your dog?
Staffordshire bull terriers x 2
How old is your dog?
7 and 3
Where did you purchase your dog?
Skibadee (7yrs) was from a breeder in Bristol, Tali (3yrs) I bred myself.
For what reason did you choose the breed you chose?
Their personality, sparkle and friendliness.
What training method (if any) did you use? Eg. Reward based training, clicker based training, reward and punishment training etc..
Reward based training
Do you have a record of the ancesters of your dog? If so, where they family dogs, fighting dogs, working dogs etc?
Mainly show dogs and family pets.
Have you experienced any difficulties in the training of you dog?
I have always find staffords easy to train and very willing to please making them great all-round dogs for agility, obedience and such. However I have found that once they have been attacked by another dog they have the tendancy to react badly to very boistrous or pushy dogs.
Do you ever avoid certain situations (for example, avoid smaller dogs) due to your dogs own behaviour?
I don't let my dogs off-lead unless I know the other dog's temprement or know the owners. There are too many people who let their dogs run riot and ruin careful training and socialisation.
Has your dog ever got into any fights?
My older stafford has been attacked before by an off-lead dog and was very shaken though not injured badly. It's these sort of attacks that make staffords dog aggressive as they become defensive around other dogs.
Does your dog get possessive over food?
No never.

Re: Calling ALL staffy owners or breeders - please help me
Breeder questionnaire:
What attracted you to breeding staffies originally?
I enjoy showing and want to slowly build up my own line and continue with showing. I first decided to breed my older dog Skibadee as I wanted another like her who might actually enjoy showing.
Have you ever had any dogs which you have been unable to sell due to temperament?
No
Would you ever refuse to sell one of your puppies to a potential buyer? If so, what would put you off a buyer?
Yes, they would have to seem sincere. Be willing to sign a contract and provide regular updates. Or if they seemed like they had very little knowledge of dogs and how to care for one. Also people who seemed like they were buying the dog specifically to breed.
What are the reasons people usually present to you for buying a Staffie?
Pet or show.
Have you ever experienced behavioural problems with a litter? Or individual?
Occasional nervousness in one bitch I bred around other dogs, can be a little bit snappy.
What training methods have you used with your dogs, if any?
Positiv reinforcement
Do you feel it is necessary to house/people break them in?
The most important part of a puppy's development is socialisation and lots of it, espose them to every possible situation.

Re: Calling ALL staffy owners or breeders - please help me
What breed is your dog? Staffordshire Bull Terrier
How old is your dog?
Approx 20 months
Where did you purchase your dog?
She is a rescue from the Blue Cross
For what reason did you choose the breed you chose?
Having grown up with dogs all life, never heard of or had a Staffy until hubby and son start to talk about them, having done some research, I was very sad to find out they had a bad name, all down to bad owners you see, not the staffys fault. When walking around the blue cross, we came upon Pixee, who was so scared of us. We just loved her from that moment.
What training method (if any) did you use? Eg. Reward based training, clicker based training, reward and punishment training etc..
I use reward training. Pixee is very clever and knows when she has done wrong, only a verbal telling off is needed.
Do you have a record of the ancesters of your dog? If so, where they family dogs, fighting dogs, working dogs etc?
None as she is a rescuse dog.
Have you experienced any difficulties in the training of you dog?
No, she learns quick.
Do you ever avoid certain situations (for example, avoid smaller dogs) due to your dogs own behaviour?
Smaller dogs dont like Pixee and are the first to have ago at her, for that reason, Pixee does not like small dogs, so I make sure she is on the lead. I will not avoid them, so long as Pixee is on the lead, I make her walk on. I have to make sure Pixee is on a lead with certain people, that is what we have learned from having her, and have put it down to her history. She is not HA, just barks at them, which can be scary for those certain people plus some take it the wrong way with her being a staffy.
Has your dog ever got into any fights?
No.
Does your dog get possessive over food?
No. Infact when we eat, she will go to her mat as taught, and when we finish, she knows she gets some scraps. I can ever leave plates and cups on the floor, ever snacks, she will never touch them.
I am happy to help with any more information.
