Staffy breeders in Ireland
Hi Folks,
I have not posted here in a long time! Very excited as myself and the OH have been talking and decided the time is right for us to start looking for our staffy I have found a couple of Irish breeders on Champdogs who health test (if we are going down the breeder rather than rescue route I will only consider reputable breeders who health test), so will be contacting them. I did contact the breed clubs here months ago but never got any reply from them, I never followed up because the time wasn't right but will get onto them again.
Anyway just wondering if anyone has contacts for or better still personal experience with any breeders in Ireland? Please PM with any info
Thanks
Sab

Both breeders are well respected, but both also produce dogs that are well above the national COI (inbreeding) average. A lot would depend on which bitch was mated to which dog.

Re: Staffy breeders in Ireland
Hi Caryll,
Thanks for that feedback regarding checking the COI on dogs - Is Mate Select the only way of checking this? I just had a look at the UK KC Mate Select (I don't think there is a similar system for Ireland?) and I did find some of their dogs on it...a couple of the Staffspride dogs (not ones listed on Champdogs) had quite a low percentage (under the 7%) but a couple of the Tarbhgorm dogs were 8/9%... I plan to ring the breeders anyway during the week...

Thanks Eogh, are they the shows in Fermoy & Tipp? I see there's a Cork SBT Ch show on the June bank hol that would probably be a good one to go to as well

Yeah there is 3 shows in cork that weekend should be a good turn out. It would be a good place to start. But be prepared to wait I waited nearly two years to get my penny

you dont really need COI test you just look at the line if theres 4/5 dogs on it more then once the COI is going be nigh to get a low COI there should be only 1 dog or no dog on it twice
Re: Staffy breeders in Ireland
As Steve says, check the pedigrees (both sides) to see if there are common ancestors within, say, 5 or 6 generations.
Mate Select gives you a quick percentage & is very useful for UK dogs, but as you say, it won't help much with dogs registered with the Irish KC.

Hi Hargar, if you go to www.dogshowentry.ie you will find a list of shows around the country (Ireland) I assume there is a similar resource for the UK. It was 3 shows though for that weekend (June Bank Holiday) not 23

Petexpo is a waste of time.
Its a rips off for starters and all you are paying for is entry into a glorified petshop.
I`ll ask around to see if anyone I know has pups. A guy I met asked me would I use Ceasar to sire his bitch.
If he rings me to arrange it when his bitch is in heat I will give you first refusal on the pup I keep.
He might never call but I`ll let you know if he does. It might be a long wait but you will be getting a quality
dog.

I hope that Ceasar & whichever bitch he might be mated to will be fully DNA/health tested? What is the bitch's pedigree? Is she good enough to breed from? Is Ceasar good enough to breed from (no offense, he's gorgeous, but they all have faults!)?

Re: Staffy breeders in Ireland
Ceasar is perfect health and condition.
His parents were not related and his father was the best Staff I ever seen.
I hope he matures into the same dog.
Unfortunately the owner did not register the pups so I have no papers
for him. I think he got upset when Travellers robbed the bitch.
Thankfully he got her back two months later.
He gave me Ceasar for nothing. All he wanted in return was that I make a donation to Dogsaid. He was not a breeder, just a dog lover with two cracking
Staffies.
If you want a dog to show then the pups won`t be of any use as Ceasar does
not have any papers. If just a family dog with good genes the Ceasar is a
great dog to breed from.
I can`t vouch for the other dog only that she looks fine.

And that's exactly why you shouldn't breed!
What about the hereditary problems within the breed? Will either of you be undertaking to get the DNA tests done? No? Irresponsible.
If you do go ahead, please don't advertise the pups on this site.

Re: Staffy breeders in Ireland
Suppose you are right.
I never intended to breed from him or any of my dogs. I just happened to
meet this guy and all he could do was praise Ceasar and he asked me would
I be interested in using him to stud.
Probably best to stay clear.
Chances are I will never see this guy again anyway.
If I do hear of any registered breeders selling pups is it ok to post it here.
Hope I am not coming across as some backyard breeder only looking to make a quick buck. My dogs are
all well looked after, in great shape and get the best of food and exercise.
I have never bred pups or gave out any of my dogs for stud before.
Even respected breeders cannot be trusted. I just read here about the inbred Staffie who won his class in Crufts.
Can`t believe it.. The only thing I breed is tropical fish and I only breed from wild, F1 or unrelated parents..

Yes, although we'd rather it wasn't any of the sites like gumtree or pets4homes.
Champdogs isn't a bad site as long as you're careful & do a bit of research.

You can contact the Irish Kennel Club and see what shows they have on.I went to a show in the RDS and saw lots of dogs and breeders.Maybe start there.I bought my pup off somebody I know who is studying to be a vet nurse assistant. You can usually tell when you meet a person if they are genuine.
