Re: Very sad story
I grew up near beaches in South Australia with many "great white" sightings and attacks (can't remember as too young), but we were always given the idea that the seas off South Africa was the worst area for shark attacks years ago.

Re: Very sad story
A very sad story yes, I hope this does not become a trend. Why are the attacks becoming greater in that area?

Re: Very sad story
I'm not sure.
WA has a huge coast line, but some of the fatalities are in very populated areas of the coast.
Maybe it's to do with over fishing of these waters and so sharks are coming in closer to land. I have to admit my "ignorant of the facts" thought as I haven't looked into it till now.
This is what I grew up hearing about sharks and it was only 10kms or so down the road. It never stopped us from swimming in the sea.

Re: Very sad story
Wow those are some serious scars. Even make my hubbys look small, he had corrective surgery on his right leg some years ago and has terrible scars on it now. We only joking say he was chewed by a shark but it spit him out. No joke really though.

Re: Very sad story
Kathy that's terrible. It's making my skin crawl.
I have a huge fear of water above my head (well waist actually), but during my adult years (around the age of 25) I spent a lot of time with various close friends in deeper water and sort of overcame it enough to manage to swim in water where I "could not touch the bottom".
This lead me to snorkeling in 20ft of water and eventually undertaking my "open water recreational diver" course in my early 30's, but I still struggled with my "drowning" fears and claustrophobia so I didn't dive that much.
My friend had his "open water" cert and we used to go out on our own or some times with friends and they would dive and I'd snorkel on the surface.
One day all 4 of us were out there and the other female member of our group surfaced and said "I don't want to be here". The guys took on board her fear and we all went back to shore.
Within 5 minutes the shark plane appeared to our east and then circled over the sea a little further out to where we were as it had spotted a shark which we found out later was a "great white".
I haven't swum in the ocean much at all since then and my fear of water over my head is well and truly back, but that would be nothing compared to being face to face with something so ugly and ferocious.

Re: Very sad story
this is one of many reason i couldn't go to oz.... you not safe anywhere if its not snakes, spiders trying to kill you you have fighting against sharks, choc, jelly fish
Re: Very sad story
Yeh, but I go to Bali now and I could randomly be in a situation where terrorists strike. But I refuse to let it stop me from experiencing something I am determined to see.
Steve, we live here day in and day out and most days I don't see even a spider or a spider web, let alone, sharks, crocs and snakes.
I think the fear of the unknown and media hype can have a lot to answer for some times
