innapropriate play?
hi all, we are getting a six year old male on wed from a reputable rescue center, the manager has had him home a few time because she adores him, she has a jack russel, shes said the staffy want obviously taught what innapropriate play is because he will run up to a dog start playing but end up pinning it down by its throat, he doesnt bite though, he shows no aggresion towards humans and past owners have said the same thing. weve met him a few times and he has a lovely laid back tempermant, if fact hes comes across as just a big friendly licky dog. so my question how do i get him over this boisterous dominant play pinning?, and advice will be appreciated, oh he is neuterd by the way, thanks.

Re: innapropriate play?
Firstly, well done on rescuing
TBH and this isn't going to be much help but I would wait until you have him home, get him settled into a routine and see how his behaviour is then. You'll be keeping him onlead for a while anyway, wait and see how he is with you Xx

Re: innapropriate play?
I totally agree with Janey you will have too judge how is with you be very aware of his signs and be cautious but not nervous when you intoduce him too other dogs, Staffords are known for pinning if you watch them play they do it alot but can also be a dominance thing, where you will notice different body language from him low growling could be hackles up no tail wagging and he won,t let the dog up, you must correct that as he could hurt another dog quite quickly, if he is on the lead voice correction will work and use a one word control like a firm NO, but until you witness this behaviour yourself you won,t know what your dealing with just see how it goes and a big pat on the back for a rescuing your an angel

Re: innapropriate play?
Sorry but to me is isn't inappropriate play, ok maybe not all other dogs will like it, but thats how my two play constantly. Staffs don't play gentle and it doesn't mean they are being aggressive

hi ella, well innapropriate play did sound a bit odd like, basically the only issue i guess will be if other dog owners decide itll be fun to let their dog come to him after i firmly warn them against it, leo will be on his lead so if they have any complaints ill just say sorry but you were clearly warned and im being the responsible owner as i say the odd time hes done that he never ever bites. he soft as a brush with people like most staffys and i have no worry on that score, its just other dogs running loose, ill just keep a close out for that, thanks ella.

Re: innapropriate play?
All three of mine play that way with each-other but know when to back off with smaller dogs. I think it just comes down to plain old socialization. As long as he never bites and learns to leave it when you tell him, I don't think it is a problem at all.

Re: innapropriate play?
When out on walks try keeping him on a lead and approach other dogs calmly or have him sit down to be introduced. I know this all sounds very silly but it may work for you after a few times of quiet introduction he may get the idea that this is the correct to do it. You could also reward a quiet and calm meeting with another dog with a small treat or a play with a favourite toy.
Hope it all works out OK.
