Outside? What should we expect at 9 weeks old?
Hi there! We are new to this forum and are hoping for some advice from those familiar
Our 9 week old staffy pup Zoe has been with us just over a week now. We have taught her to 'sit' although she doesn't do it every time she is still very good. She is full of beans like a puppy is, and although we take her outside very frequently for toilet time when she is so hypo and playing inside she still urinates occationally on the floor. I know, persistance pays off!
We both work and in 3 weeks she will be left outside during the day, every second day for 7hours on her own.
At the moment, we are leving her out gradually more each day (when it's not bucketing rain here in Melbourne) and are training her to stay in her kennell when she wants to rest. She is doing this but she is very sooky. Once we go inside and leave her she waits for a minute then is at the back door, whining and yelping.
The things we are doing are this:
* Giving a clear, deep 'NO!'
* Patting her while in her kennell
* Puttiing a couple of treats and toys in her kennell to encourage her to stay in there
* Giving her a small frozen meat portion to keep her occupied while she is outside on her futon.
I feel she will eventually quieten down and learn but its exhausting and its been only a week!
Any other suggestions on how we can stop her crying when she is on her own?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Outside? What should we expect at 9 weeks old?
Hi & welcome to the forum.
I've never kept a dog outside so I really don't think I can be much help to you. I do think that 7 hours alone is too much for a 9 week old, though. Sorry.

Hi and welcome from us and Suki. We've never left a dog outside so not much help. Is there a place in the house you can leave her and someone that can take her out during the day?

Re: Outside? What should we expect at 9 weeks old?
At the moment we are not leaving her outside for 7 hours, we will be doing that when she is 12 weeks old. As i said in my post, we are just trying to get her used to being outside, small blocks of time at this stage. Any advice from people who have left their staffy outside and tips on how to handle her sooking would be much appreciated
My mother and father in law live around the corner so they will be stopping in to check on her half way through the day, and no we dont have somewhere inside we can leave her as we do not own this house and she is still scratching and biting some things. I wish this were easy !

Toilet training a pup will be very difficult if she's just left to her own devices for large chunks of time. Even someone popping in once or twice a day isn't really enough for such a young pup. Twelve weeks isn't much different to 9 weeks, I'm afraid.
Staffordshire Bull Terriers thrive on human companionship & can prove difficult if they're not socialised properly & given human companionship in the fisrt few months at least.

Thanks Becki2009,
We are crate training her inside at night (she is in our room) for toilet training purposes and she is responding quite well.
Unfortunatly we cannot afford for someone to be with her all day every day, we just dont have that luxury. Its not like it will be all week, its three days out of 7. Hmmm. I know she is quite young and still will be obviously at 12 weeks. Ill see how we go. Thanks for everyones input

Re: Outside? What should we expect at 9 weeks old?
Hiyas
When Pippa was that young, if we had to go out, she would go into the laundry (as it has a tiled floor so easy to clean up messes). She had her bed, toys and treats in there. I put newspaper down on the floor as eventually she learned that the newspaper was for going to the toilet when inside. I just made sure everything else (that I didn't want wrecked lol) up on the washing machine or in the sink. She shredded the paper a lot, but eventually, she did leave those few pieces alone for her business. I, luckily though, also had the option of being able to come home every couple of hours to let her out for 20 mins and it was a couple of times a week. Now she loves being out the back, but I still check on her if she is alone for a while (with all the staffies being stolen in the Illawarra (NSW) lately. Good luck . I am sure you will work out whats best in your situation
