Staffy rolling on her back!?
Hello everyone:)
this isnt so much a problem as Missy doesnt do it very often or to the extremes my last staffy Roxy did it but i was just curious whether anyone elses staffy does it.
when i had Roxy we lived in a wee vilage in the country with about 20 houses surrounded by farmland and feilds. Roxy always had a terrible habbit of finding a giant mud puddle, cow poo or a dead animal to roll around in!! it was disgusting. when bathed she would often do it again at the first opourtunity...
My new staff Missy has now also started to do this although less frequently and usualy just in soil or in mounds of grass or leaves. it can be quite amusing but i discourage it as i dont want her to end up as bad as roxy.lol...
just wondering why they do this and do any of yours do the same thing??
Thanks guys n gals

Re: Staffy rolling on her back!?
Yes Rocky very often does this when we take him for a walk in the park.
He will have a good roll around on the grass, but thankfully not usually in anything too smelly
I have often wondered why they do it too ??

Re: Staffy rolling on her back!?
Yup! It's especially common in terrier breeds. Apparently it's to disguise their smell so their pray can't smell them coming. One of mine is a sh1t roller!
So endearing isn't it??!!

Lily does that too! A fellow dog walker whose retriever did the same told me it was a bitch thing. Though I don't know why.

Re: Staffy rolling on her back!?
I think alot of dogs have this wonderfully nasty habit YUK
Its not down too a breed the believe is it comes from the domestic dogs link too the wolve they role too mask their scent so they can hunt, there was also prove that stray or secluded wolves would role in smelly stuff too disguise the smell of a pack so they could be excepted into another pack,
in domestic dog we like them clean and smelling nice but they prefer too smell of something more natural lol

Not just bitches, I'm afraid, Dempsey's a horror for it........fox poo, cow pats, sheep muck, horse sh1t - you name it, he'll roll in it.
Oh, except for his own poo - he seems to think that's disgusting & tip toes past it.

Lola does it inside & outside if she finds poop she likes that she doesnt eat!
Re: Staffy rolling on her back!?
Bella rolls and pushes herself along on the grass but thankfully, so far, she hasn't been rolling in anything nasty lol

Re: Staffy rolling on her back!?
Yep and as stated it is mainly to hide their scent for hunting. It's instint. Their prey can smell them coming from miles away otherwise. Or in the modern world, their owners can now smell them coming from miles away

Re: Staffy rolling on her back!?
Mine do this all the time. Skibadee is quite funny because she will do like rolls downhill, like a child rolling quickly down a grassy slope! Brandy (Tali's sister) does this mid-run. She runs as fast as she can and throws herself on the ground, rolls 360degrees and carries on running!

Re: Staffy rolling on her back!?
Samson rolls now and again, but so far never in anything horrible.
Could be inside or out, and he takes ages to finish and return to whatever he was doing previous.

Re: Staffy rolling on her back!?
Lola doesn't, i used to walk a big daft lab/doberman/godknowswhat cross thing (Jelly) that would roll in anything that had been dead at least three days. best bit was walking him back home and teling the owner " i think he needs a bath tonight "
Lola does chase her tail in the house so much that she ends up on her back snapping at her back legs (they sneak up on her...) but thats about it
and by the way, Skibadee is possibly the best name for a dog i've ever heard

Callie isn't a roller but she'll eat ANYTHING. Including deer poo. Also bird poo. Thankfully not her own poo.
Does that make you feel any better?

Yes!
Both of mine do this!
But my girl Juno loves to do it in muddy patches at the local dog park! I just keep a big thick blanket permanently in my car for the backseat, as when she is finished she is covered in mud, she loves it soooo much though!
