Staffies and BBQ'S
Morning all. The weather has put paid to having a BBQ today, but we are wondering how you keep your pooch safe without banishing him/her from the event.
The only way we can think of (cos Sophie isn't sensible enough yet) is to put the BBQ itself in a separate area outside the garage (through a side gate) so she has absolutely no access to it whatsoever.
We couldn't trust she wouldn't attempt to jump up at it, particularly if there were meaty teats on it and the last thing in the world we would want is an accident.
Any advice would be appreciated as she is obviously part of the family and would be distraught if kept inside.
We will obviously be cooking her her own chicken portion as due to her diet she is banned from all else
How do you lot cope or are all your staffies impeccably behaved and totally sensible.

Re: Staffies and BBQ'S
When we have barbies, we just make sure the dogs are never left alone, there's always someone there to ensure they don't get too close, if they do get up and try to approach the BBQ, they get told 'away'

Re: Staffies and BBQ'S
I'm sure she would be OK near it with regards to the heat, she wouldn't let herself get burned, but then again a nice juicy steak ummmmm..........................
Probably best kept away.

Re: Staffies and BBQ'S
My girls get banned from about 4/5 feet within the bbq's range. TBH they aren't stupid, once they realise its hot they wont try and stick their noses in it.

Re: Staffies and BBQ'S
Ledger wont go anywhere close to smoke during the olympic torch run with all the street bbqs I had to keep crossing to the other side of the road with him so no problems keeping him away from a BBQ also if anything sizzles on the cooker (even bacon) he runs and sits in another room

Re: Staffies and BBQ'S
Pixee knows when cooking, she is to stay away. I taught her, when I cook, she can stay in the kitchen but on her mat, and my work area is out of bounds. We had two BBQs, to which hubby does the cooking, we put her mat outside, and she knew, food, cooking to stay away and yet she was still part of the event. When we eat, she will lie on her mat and wait patient for scrabs.

Re: Staffies and BBQ'S
We're lucky, we have the barbecue in a part of the garden that can be closed off (bit difficult to explain), and we put up a gate between us & Dempsey. He can still see us (and get the odd bit of meat) but he stays safely away from the barbecue etc.
