Fat Staffies
Now, this is just something i noticed today when me and Romeo ran off to do some errends. We saw 3 other staffs today... all of them... much more roundly then Romeo. BUt now that i think about it, every staff i know is more rounded then Romeo. Even the ones we have owned before have been a little more dropped in the belly so to say. Romeo's brother and sisters are all fatter then what he is. which makes me think.. is everyone else fat... or is romeo just very skinny little git?
Took a quick snap of him just then, he normally looks a little more tucked up, but he had just eaten some snacks.

He looks good to me
I see a lot of fat dogs around, not just Staffies something like half of all the dogs in the UK or overweight
I'm often being told that my Lab is skinny when he's just right, it's just most people don't know what a slim Lab looks like!

He looks great IMO. He's lean and has a nice tuck on him.
I've seen some fatass staffys too, prolly overfed or not exercised.

Romeo looks a perfect fit boy my skye is like him she is very fit muscular and quite lean, staffords can turn abit chubby quick its in their make up, and i do like the round ones as long as they aren,t unhealthy.
Your boy is in really great shape i can,t see visable ribs and he looks very healthy x

I think he looks great. I've wondered if Bella was too thin a few times. When you look at her side on she seems a lot thinner than a lot of staffs I see around, but you can't see any ribs

I think he looks great. He doesn't look too skinny and he most definitely isn't overweight, just right I'd say. He looks in great shape.

Re: Fat Staffies
i have so many people on the streets saying he's a bit thin. but i think you're all right. people over feed their dogs so much... no one knows what a healthy one looks like anymore!
I will admit, i'd like to see a bit more meat on him, but maybe we work towards muscel not fat.

Re: Fat Staffies
He looks just about right I get comments about both mine but I prefer them not too chunky
I used to get told my gsds were too thin but keeping them lean stopped them from having trouble with their hips
I also see a lot of rolly polly dogs about

Yep looks really good to me, I personally prefer staffy's lean, and not a fan of the barrel look they can get REALLY easily through bad diet and lack of exercise

Re: Fat Staffies
he's 9 months old here. it was just a thought since he is much leaner then his siblings.
When he is 2 i do want to use him with agility, so i do try and keep him fit, but no matter what i feed him he burns it off so quickly.
His mother has A/B hips... which...is amazing, but his father has C/C hips, i freally hope he gets his mothers hips but he is the slplitting image of his father

Re: Fat Staffies
He does have good muscle tone for 9mths, and his chest hasnt even started to "spring" at that age (just a term I use, not an official way of describing chest development )
Keep the pics coming as he grows up

Re: Fat Staffies
looks healthy to me, not that i'm an expert by any stretch of the imagination. but from what i've read in books and on here they should taper in to the waist and should b abel to feel ribs but not see them.
again not an expert so anyone with more knowledge please feel free to correct me, would hate to be giving bad advice.

Re: Fat Staffies
I personally prefer to see the last 2-3 ribs (depending with it's a large or small dog) on short haired dogs but i like to keep them lean to avoid them carrying any extra weight on their joints

Re: Fat Staffies
yeah its going to be intresting to see what he looks like when he's 2.... he's going to be a big big boy. he's currently 17kgs last time i checked.
i wouldt mind him popping out in the chest, its a weak point of his in shows, but the more i do shows the more i find myself drawn to agility.
i do like the very lean but definded staffs. romeo is just such a lanky bugger

Same with Max, he is pretty leggy, and not as wide ribbed as I'd like, but he is SOOOO fit, fast, and healthy, how many staff's do you know that can run down a rabbit on an open feild ??!! .. he is amazing!
I was convinced he would top 24kg ish based on his growth rate, but his chest/width seems to have slowed right down now, tho he is still filling out, and his face keeps changing!

Re: Fat Staffies
He looks great Ledger isn't far off the same he looked a bit leaner at 17kg but I think that was his brindle when you saw him from certain angles it highlighted the last couple of ribs. I queried it at the vets and he said its just become society has become used to seeing overweight dogs so when they are healthy they look thin. Although I am on a diet so Ledger has been getting my chicken skin/bacon fat etc and he has put on just over 1kg and I think he looks better for it

Looks good to me! I like lean and muscular as well. I don't like pudge much as a regular rule, but kinda like a little chunk on Piggy for some reason...

Re: Fat Staffies
Romeo is rather quick. last month he caught and killed a squerrel.... it was a little shocking, i dont think that poor little creature was all there since it didnt notice Romeo till the last momment.
i have had so many people tell me he's actually quiet tall and long for a staff, but i guess i will just have to wait for his muscels and head to catch up to the rest of his body

Re: Fat Staffies
I like Romeo's build. Tyson is defo a little overweight to my mind so he is now on reduced calorie food and not peanut butter congs. I weighed him at the vet's last week 24.5kg. Vet says he should be around 20. He will be two in a few months and I do see his body still changing.

Re: Fat Staffies
I love Romeo To me he looks perfect in the pictures. He looks a similar build to Buster, who is also 9 months and 17kg ish. I wand Buster to stay the shape he is now as I like my dogs to have a bit of shape to them, but who knows what he will look like when he fills out a bit as he is very skinny at the moment - although he has got some muscle definition now, he didn't have any when I got him!
My OH commented the other day as we see alot of staffies around here that are like barrells on legs, he thought that maybe Buster was too skinny so I had to tell him he's not, he's just right, most other dogs we see - of every breed - are overweight.

I think he looks great! Too many overweight people, we all know-I think dogs too.
I think Callie is going to be more lanky and less boxy-she is much more slender than her sibs. I was looking at the other puppies in the July photo contest, she is much rangier than all of them!

Re: Fat Staffies
He looks perfect! I see a couple of staffies on our walks sometimes - do you remember The Moog from the Willo the Wisp cartoon (UK)? Poor little beggers have to roll side to side to get about. I love to see a lean, muscular dog with good definition.
With Benson being a forelimb amputee I'll aim to keep him a little under. This coupled with the fact that he has no muscle on his stumpy left shoulder means his head looks totally MASSIVE when you look at him straight on!
You've got an oil painting and I've got a cartoon dog!

Re: Fat Staffies
I hate fat dogs, Romeo is perfect. Trust me you don't want to bulk your pup out with food and then try and get him fit in a years time. Too many people mistake fat for substance, its all about keeping your dog as fit as possible throughout puppyhood and slowly building them up. I have always kept mine lean, walked them a lot and fed them good food and they grow at a nice rate in their own time.
