My 1st staffy
Just got my first ever dog. I have read up so much info before I got her to make sure I was well prepared but one thing I am not sure on is her diet, I have brought her Eukanuba puppy complete, now the pack says to soak it in water but the lady at pets at home never mentioned this. Shimmer (my new arrival) eats it really well wet and dry so now I dont know how to serve it to her. She always has plenty of water too. xx
Re: My 1st staffy
Hi lil em, you must be so excited.. i know i was!
When I got Zeus two months ago (also my first dog), he wouldnt really eat his dry food, but I put some water in it a few times to soften it up for him and he ate it. I'd say try giving it dry first, if your pup has difficulties biting/crunching it, then put some water in the food about 10/15 minutes before your going to give it to her. I think the problem was that the food was too hard for his teeth and he didnt like biting into it, but once it was soft/mushy like, he gobbled it all up!

Hi & welcome!
Exciting times, new pup, new staffie! By all means soften it up with a bit of hot water, let it cool, & then give it to her.
What food was she on when she was with the breeder? Did they give you a diet plan & some food to get you going?

Re: My 1st staffy
He said she was on tripe. He was very good with her papers and everything else but as for her diet he kept talking about tripe. Which Ive never heard of before so I thought it was best to go to pets at home and seek advice there. Shes fine on the dry food like I say she'll eat it wet or dry but just worried for her little tummy and whether it will swell inside her if its not wet. And yes I so excited, just love her to bits already hate having to go to work now lol. Thanks everyone for the advice. xx
Re: My 1st staffy
Tripe's a great food for dogs, but it can be very smelly! A lot of breeders feed it because it's cheap & nutritious, but not always easy to get hold of.
The dry's fine - as long as you don't overfeed her she'll do well with it it dry or moistened with water - whichever she likes best, really.

Re: My 1st staffy
Finally figured how to upload pics and decided to with wet for now as she is only little. Thanks for all advice so glad I joined xx We were going to call her Shadow but her registered name is girl of the night Shimmer xx
Re: My 1st staffy
Oh shes gorgeous! So so cute! And as others have said you can give the food wet or dry. If she will eat it dry I would give her it like that as the abrasive biscuit will keep her teeth healthy. The food won't swell in her stomach, at least not to the point of making her ill, her stomach acid will break it down. How exciting, I wouldn't want to go to work either. Actually scrap that I never do want to anyway!

Re: My 1st staffy
Lol yer I know looking for another job atm. Apparently women dont belong in commercial kitchens their place is in domestic kitchens lol. love the pic btw
Re: My 1st staffy
Thanks! You should put one up of shimmer by your name (through the 'profile' link in the bar at the top). Don't let them tell you that about working in the kitchen! I have female friends who are head and sous chefs and they r better than the blokes!

Re: My 1st staffy
Tripe isnt for the weak of constitution but have you ever considered a raw diet? If not have a look: https://staffy-bull-terrier.niceboard.com/t14787-raw-diet
as for the wet/dry thing, if your puppy is happy to eat it dry i would be inclined to let her. One, it is better for her teeth and secondly it saves the hassle and mess lol

I love the name, by the way!
One of Tilly's best friend's is called Shimmer a good friend's dog, and it was because we were looking after her that it spurred us on to go out that weekend and when they returned we already had Tilly (but we had been discussing it for a while and decided on a staffy already She's beautiful
