still skinny ribs - question
ok, Tank 13 wks is otherwise healthy, but hes a lil skinny to be honest.
He was in bad shape when we got him, could see his spine and ribs and hair loss due to stress.
He eats like a piglet and loves his food, hes on wainwrights puppy complete trays.
A Complete Pet Food For Puppies.
Turkey (min. 65%), Turkey Liver (min. 5%), Brown Rice (min. 5%), Minerals, Seaweed, Chicory Root.
Additives; Vitamin A: 1500µ/kg, Vitamin D3: 150µ/kg, Vitamin E (α-Tocopherol): 25µ/kg, Calcium 0.51%, Phosphorus 0.42%.
he eats a whole tray a day spilt into 4 meals. This is more than the recomended amount but he literally inhales it so fast !
I have thought about what I can give him to get him to pack on a few more lbs... im thinking pasta cooked with a drop of salmon oil. Only once a day but now hes going out for walks hes gonna be using loads more energy and im worried cause he has zero bodyfat. We cant see his spine now but his ribs are still visible.
He isnt infested with worms either incase anyone asks - he had a bad start, bullied by litter mates and weaned onto crap food.
so, pasta and salmon oil in addition to what hes getting is gonna be ok ?
xx ty

Re: still skinny ribs - question
You can 'just' see the ribs on my two but i don't want to put anymore weight on as i keep them lean. As long as they are REALLY visible then it's fine and don't worry about it

To be honest, some dogs are just never more than lean. It's just the way their bodies use their food. As long as you can't see his spine or pin (hip) bones then he's fine.
If you want to 'bulk' him up a bit you could try some green tripe, but I really wouldn't worry.

Like Caryll has said, green tripe is great for adding weight if he needs it or just increase the amount of puppy food you're giving him. I personally wouldn't give pasta.

Re: still skinny ribs - question
No, I don't think pasta would bulk him up, either. It would fill him up, but he'd gain no goodness from it.
As Galadriel says, either increase his food a bit (after all, the packet guidelines are only that - guidelines) or give him some green tripe. But whatever you do, if you give him green tripe let him have it raw - if you cook it the smell will not only suffocate you, but will seep into your walls, furniture & clothes for days!

You can get it from the freezer section in pets at home, theres not really much point buying online if you aren't going to feed raw, or more raw meals

Pets at home have stopped doing the bags of tripe chunks, they sell frozen bags of tripe mince now. Ive tried to find somewhere that does the chunks but got to a dead end all the time, anyone help???

Maybe have a word with your local butcher. Chances are he'll only have white tripe if he has any at all but he maybe able to get some for you if you ask nicely or tell you where you might be able to get some.

I really wouldn't worry as long as he is gaining weight at a steady rate. He looks fine from your profile picture, I would just keep on doing what you are doing it is much much healthier for him to gradually gain weight rather than pile it all on at once. As Caryll says pasta will just make him feel full but he wont really get any nutrition from it, try a bit of cooked brown rice and sardines in sunflower oil to fill him up and bulk him out. Or as others say green tripe (it stinks though so be warned!). Hes lovely btw you are doing a good job
