walking in this horrendous weather
more on the adventures of Jellybean - she hates this weather, won't walk in it and I'm not going to just stand there doing the stuff they say to do to get a dog to walk with wind and rain spitting in my face. So what do we do to exercise her? Loads of playing indoors comes to mind, but I work from home and do need time for that. What I want is to get her to walk when we want her to, no matter what.
Help please (again!)

Re: walking in this horrendous weather
Playing games can also tire her out. Nina Ottosson does some good puzzle/games. You can also do some obedience training with her
She might get better as she gets a bit older. Blue loves the rain, I'm the one gripping the door casing as he pulls me out.
Hopefully someone will come on soon who has had a simular problem and give you some solutions

Re: walking in this horrendous weather
we played some tug and training, but not enough - she did finally pass out though.
swimming... funny you mention that Janey - I was just talking about trying to get her to swim the other day. how did you introduce Moo to it? When I was a kid we had a German Shorthair Pointer that was supposed to be a hunting dog (HA!) so my Dad threw him into the pond and he just swam out. Guess it's natural for dogs, what with a type of swimming named after then and all (doggy paddling - maybe that's just American English?) Anyway, I digress
We are going to get her some very own waterproofs soon, but if we had done it earlier we would have bought her a new raincoat every couple of days. I'm hoping her growing is starting to level out a bit, but might give it another month or so just in case. We were counting on the weather improving for summer as well! Might just have to bite the bullet - only the best for little miss! Funny, I've lived here nearly 6 years and don't even own an umbrella, a rain coat or Wellies but my puppy will
It's finally stopped raining a bit, just windy, so might try again soon, bribing her with liver along the way.
thanks guys!

Re: walking in this horrendous weather
With the swimming I can't really remember! I think I just threw sticks in and gradually threw them further and further until she was swimming. She's not like some on here that will launch herself in, she prefers to wade in from a shore, but its great exersize even if I'm just stood there like a lemon in the pouring rain lol!
Hope you enjoy your walk

Re: walking in this horrendous weather
i was thinking the exact same thing, i haven't taken Zeus for a walk for three days now. however, i do a few things to tire him out:
- run up and down the living room while he chases me (tires him out very quick) or the other way round, i chase him, he runs for his life!
- play brain games with him to mentally tire him out (e.g. hide the treat)
- obedience train (teach him new tricks or enforce older tricks, tires him out fairly quick, taught him 'lie down' the other day and he was knackered by the end of it!)

Don't count on it! Staffs grow upwards until they're about a year or so, and then outwards for the next two years!

I thought that might be so... she is so big already, we thought she would be a medium sized dog but WOW. Big girl. Oh well, we love her anyway.

Re: walking in this horrendous weather
My Blu hates the rain and would not walk very well in it, always trying to pull for home. My wife suggested a jacket for him and thought no way, I'm not walking my dog in a jacket. Anyway she found him a Parker Jacket, complete with fur trimmed hood and I thought no way will he wear that. Well I was wrong, he loves his jacket and will not go out in the rain without it on.
When he has his Parker on, it does not matter how hard its raining, out he goes with his tail and head held high. No more pulling for home or dragging his paws with his head down and tail between his legs. Maybe a waterproof coat will work for you as well.

Wow your Blu looks like my Blue. My Blue hates the rain if you let him out in the garden, however put his lead on and go for a walk and he loves it

Yep they are very much alike I will get a photo of him in his Parker put up soon so everyone can see what it looks like. I had never seen a dog jacket like this before.

Re: walking in this horrendous weather
Pixee first thing in the morning wont go out in rain. So funny. She stands there watching me as if I am the crazy one wanting to go out. However in the afternoon, maybe cos of needing excise she will somehow go out in the rain, but not far. What I tend to do, is run up and down the stairs with her, boy she loves it. Somehow my husband only has to say up, up she runs, down, down she runs, where as with me, I have to do it with her
