Jumping 2 year old.
I'm sure this has been gone over time and again so sorry in adavnce but....
Muggle has always jumped but it seems to have got progressively worse. She is 2 years old this month and as she's bigger now (although small for a staff) she can no longer get away with this like she used to with strangers. The biggest problem is the height she gets when she jumps, sometimes head height and that she runs full belt up to people to do it. There is no malice in her and she is doing it to play but obviously it could be quite risky and undoubtedly intimidating for people that dont know her. I have started her basic manners training again with her as I haev probably been a bit slack with it since she stopped attending training classes a month or two ago. She has her silver award believe it or not! I'm worried about this and have started to think that I should probably keep her on the lead all the time. What do you think? Any suggestions?

Have you tried keeping her on lead and sitting before meeting strangers?

When she was a pup yes but not for a while. I'll give it another try and arrange some 'encounters' with friends on a walk. I really would prefer she didn't have to end up being on the lead all the time.

Re: Jumping 2 year old.
Ultimately if she can't be trusted not to go bounding all over people then you are right and you should keep her on a lead for such situations , but for people you know you can give her some trust and enlist the help of these people to help you and make sure they keep her down, I can see the biggest hurdle you've got is the fact that she doesn't do it with you so you can't practice at home . TBH we don't trust Tilly not to do it as various people around us encourage her to be over friendly , and this is fine with them but she can't differentiate she ain't a rocket scientist. I have now worked out I can distract her with a treat (or when she thinks I've got a treat) so I can keep her off lead with cyclists and joggers, but for all else I put her on the lead , sometimes she will go up gently and thats really sweet as people realise she's not a nasty dog , but sometimes she will jump up at people and this has to be deemed as unacceptable , though there are still a lot of savvy dog people that are ok

Re: Jumping 2 year old.
Go back to the basic training you started with her in the beginning and re-run it. We still go over basic stuff with Rocky and keep at it.
When you have visitors to your home keep her on the lead to start with and see how things go, if she remains calm then give her praise. I'm sure she will soon get the idea that calm behaviour gets rewards.

Re: Jumping 2 year old.
i have been having exactly the same problem with missy(also 2). i have been trying to train her to walk nice off the lead for the last few weeks with some success. if i call her she will come back as long as there are no distractions (other dogs, birds, rabbits, ducks seagulls or food)lol...she will always return though an she has been geting alot better. it seems other people are the biggest problem as she just wants to be friendly. she will run up to straingers and jump on them. luckly they have all been ok about it but as mentioned it can be intimitating to others and is not realy acceptable. also the other day we were walking off lead down the canal and there were two teenagers sitting on the bank enjoying the evening when missy takes off towards them. she jamp up on one and gave the other a huge lick on the face then rolled over expecting to get her belly rubbed haha.i know she is just been a sook but i want her to learn that its not ok. i have had all visitors to the house and friends met on walks to tell her "down" and put her down if necessary. the only thing is me and the girlfriend will let her jump up and sit on our lap for a cuddle at night time and sit on the sofa with us for a while. if i want her to stop jumping at strangers will we have to stop allowing her up at nights??

Hello Chris,
Firstly just wanted to say love your avatar Very CUTE!
My 1 year old girl Juno does the same thing with other people, my younger boy believe it or not is a lot better with this situation. One suggestion I have for you which is safer than having her off the leash and jumping on strangers, is if she does not jump on you at home, invite some people over who are not intimidated by jumping dogs and practice the sitting inside the house in familiar surroundings. Once you have perfected this, then you could try taking her out on a lead and trying the same thing when meeting with strangers, always offering a treat of course
That's what I have been working on at the moment and it seems to be working, although my girl is still quite young and not at the stage to be trusted off leash where other people are around, as she wants to say hello to everyone!
Hope this is a help,
- Melanie
