Bumpy rash on Judds back???
Hi all...First of all, Judd and i are new members of this forum, and we got Judd about 6 weeks ago. He is now 15 weeks old and cruisin along nicely. Today he has developed a bumpy rash on one side of his back causing his furr to be slightly raised. I was in the back yard with him and didnt notice it then. About 30 minutes later i noticed his fur was raised a bit. It seems to have spread from the center of his back to his hind leg, only on the left side. It doesnt seem to bother him, but just thought someone might of experienced something similar. I will keep a close eye on him, and may have to take him to his vet for a check up. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Bumpy rash on Judds back???
Hi and welcome to the forum
It may be an alergic reaction to something in the garden.
Are the lumps something simular to what my dog got?

Hi and welcome.
It does sound like an allergic reaction. Bella gets similar lumps when she has been out in the sun and Millie is allergic to certain household cleaners and has the same reaction.

Re: Bumpy rash on Judds back???
Blue got his because he thought it would be a good idea to help our cat out to catch a rat. He must of got scratched and had an alergic reaction to it. It never bothered him it just looked bad.
With Blue I gave him half a piriteze tablet and it went down within a couple of hours but I wouldn't recommend that with your dog due to him being so young. I think Blue was about one and a half years old when he got it.
I would say keep an eye on it and if it starts getting worse then take him to the vet.

piriteze should NOT be given to dogs .... But PIRITON (not the non-drowsy)can be, vets will give Piriton to dogs with allergic reactions.
Your pups young so i would 1st bath him, just in case what ever has made him react in such away is on his fur.
If you buy Piriton over the counter dont say its for your dog as they wont sell it to you.
As his young i would give him half a tablet in the morning and half at night.

Re: Bumpy rash on Judds back???
There is no offical research into piriteze being unsafe for dogs. I think there was 1 case in which it increased the heart rate of a dog resulting in death but nothing to say piriton wouldn't have done the same to that dog.
I would be wary of giving Judd any tablets unless the vet clears it since he is so young. But giving a bath is a great advice.
How is he? has the rash gone down?

Re: Bumpy rash on Judds back???
A lot of times these things can be caused by an allergic reaction to a flower or even insect in the garden. Keep a close eye and if it gets any worser take the dog to your local vets.

Re: Bumpy rash on Judds back???
gday everyone...thanks for all your great advice. Well i took Judd to the vet and they done a skin scrape to check for mites etc. Nothing came up, but they gave him some advocate anyway to rule out any skin irritations. And he also had an ear infection as well. So he has to have drops in his ear twice a day...which he doesnt like what so ever.
I done some research on the net about toxic plants for dogs and came across some that i have in the backyard. So i spent all day getting rid of them all, just to rule out all possibilities. So hopefully we can get on top of things. If its not any of the above...could be his diet. Fingers crossed.

Good to hear the update.
Now you have posted 4 times (offical deadline for pics is 5 )
Good to hear Judd is on the mend. Keep in touch, and I wasn't going to mention it but if you could post some pics that would be great

Hi and welcome from us and Suki. She hates getting eardrops as well. We will normally wait until she is asleep if they are needed.

Blue loves them....but it might be the ear massage I give him afterwards to loosen it all.

Re: Bumpy rash on Judds back???
Ok...Judds skin problem is still at large!!! It looked like it was clearing, but a couple of days later it flared up again. Prior to that i had cleared the yard of any nasty plants and stopped his wet food as i thought that could be the suspect. And to top it off his fur is falling out. He still has lumps but when i checked them they dont seem to be red at all. Please help!!!

Re: Bumpy rash on Judds back???
My girls get quite bad allergic reactions in the summer. They never get these lumps in the winter just at around this time of year. Usually the hives just heal up and scab over. They will lose a bit of hair as when the scabs fall off the hair goes with them. Tali had a really bad reaction to some bites this weekend, when I went to re-cream them with sudocrem last night they were full of pus Fortunately shes a star and let me gently express the gunk and put more cream on. It seems staffs are quite prone to allergies, mine seem to be triggered by certain bugs and pollens/plants.

Re: Bumpy rash on Judds back???
With it being bumps, I'd think it's more likely to be an environmental allergy rather than a food allergy although he could still have a food intolerance that's putting stress on his immune system hence the ear infection and a food intolerance can make environmental allergies worse.
What do you feed him?
Did you change anything in the house that you can think of around the time the bumps started to appear like washing powder, cleaning products?

Re: Bumpy rash on Judds back???
We havent changed nothing since we've had him. The bumps havent scabbed or anything...not even red, but seems to be spreading down to his tale. In some areas the fur is almost gone. If it gets any worse i will take him back to the vet for another check up. Pretty sure its not mange, as my previous staffy (RIP Boss) had it many many years ago, so i know what to look out for.

My vet told me that Piriteze is actually stronger than Piriton & is usually given once a day, whereas Piriton can be spread over the day in about 2 or 3 doses. Also, allergies can raise a dog's heart rate & Piriteze is known to do tha same, so you could introduce a potential problem.
I'd stay safe with Piriton, half a tablet twice a day.

Re: Bumpy rash on Judds back???
Piriton contains the active indredient 'chlorphenamine maleate' whereas piritize contains 'cetirizine' which is a different compound all together. Although it is rare for dogs to have a reaction to chlorphenamine maleate it is not one of the more effective treatments for allergies in canines. however I have used half a tablet or 5ml of liquid in the past and hives have gone away quite quickly. Unfortunately Tali is pregnant so cant have any meds

Re: Bumpy rash on Judds back???
And btw vets can prescribe both so it is not considered dangerous to give them either tablet, I would just err on the side of caution.

I don't think you can get Piriton in Australia, but any anti histamine with the same ingredients should be ok.

Re: Bumpy rash on Judds back???
Hi Not sure if this will help with all the other advice you have been given, But my skye has had outbursts of lumpy rashes not red just raised under the skin, after afew trips too the vets without much help i eventually worked it out that it came up after her walks in wet grass i use sudocream and aloe vera on the skin along with pirioton when necessary try that and see if it helps i would also advise you dry him well don,t leave him damp as skyes got worst if i did that, hope he is better soon xx

Re: Bumpy rash on Judds back???
Gday everyone...just letting you all know that Judds ear infection is gone, and i think his skin is on the mend aswell . A friend of mine gave me some medicated wash known as "Vetadine" We bathed him in it a few days ago and the raised skin/fur is nearly gone. And his coat is shiny as, and he seems happier aswell.
