Sad Help with feeding (amount, frequency)

Post by rodders666 Tue May 22 2012, 12:18

Hi,
Baxter is now 12 months old (and 11 days). We use a dry food from our local pet shop (their own mix).
We use two different 'flavours' Lamb & Chicken.
An example of information for the chicken one is as follows:

Ingredients:
  • Chicken Meat (min 22%), Rice (min 22%), Maize, Barley, Beet Pulp, Chicken Fat, Fish Meal, Dried Yest, Salt, Yucca Meal, Antioxidant BHA

Analysis:
  • Protein (21.5%), Oil (9%), Fibre (2%), Ash (7%), Vit A 10000 iu/kg, Vit D3 1500 iu/kg, Vit E 80mg/kg, Copper 16 mg/kg

We were advised for his size (25kg) to give him 300g per day with 100g of a wet mix. For the wet mix we give him Nature-Diet (Lamb, Rabbit & Turkey, Fish and Chicken). So in all he has 300g biscuits & 100g wet per day split into two feeds (150g dry in morning & 150 dry/100g wet mix in the late afternoon/early evening).

The vet confirms he is in good shape, feel his ribs but not see and has a good waistline etc, but we are not sure if we are giving him enough as he seems to gobble his food quickly when it is down (now this is the flip side of his previous food as he would sometimes skip breakfast and only eat later hence changing his food). The change of food was done in stages and he's been on his new food/routine for 3 weeks now. The vet saw him just last week.

Does anybody know if firstly this is enough food (we've been advised it is plenty) and if the gobbling is something we need to worry/think about?

He also has the occasional meaty bone from the butcher and he likes to eat carrots (ends chopped off & cleaned), apples (cored & peeled). He likes bananas too. He has a DentaStix daily (not for food obviously) with a large charcoal biscuit mid morning & occasional treats (we're training) and doggie biscuits....well, coz he's a good boy Smile

He gets regular walks (at least two per day about 40 minutes each) along with runs with his ball on the field too.

Thanks in advance, and sorry if I have gone on....I just want to be sure my boy is getting all he needs Smile

Smile

Sounds just about right! I wouldn't mix dry & wet, nutritionally there's no need, but I know a lot of people do & it seems to work.

He probably gobbles his food quickly because he likes it! Big Grin

I thought that as he really goes at his new food. I mix the wet as it's a change.....I wouldn't like to just eat dry stuff all the time, so just dry in morning and bit of other flavour at tea Smile

Cheers

Sounds about right to me, I personally feed raw but Harv gets about 300-350g of food normally (unless on a gorge day).
