Hi all, I'm new to Staffies
Hi everyone.
I recently went to a dog rescue home and saw how many Staffies are in need of a loving home. The people at the rescue home were very helpful and very keen to match us with a Staffie.
I really love the sound of the Staffie's temperament, they seem very loyal and fun-loving but I am worried about whether there would be problems with one living with my dogs.
I've done some research on the internet and some websites say that they have a dog fighting past and are best as the only dogs in the house. Other websites say they are not good with other dogs in the house unless raised with them as a puppy.
I have a 5 year old female Boxer and a 4 year old female Bichon Frise. Becasue I have two females I think it would be best if i got a male. I would ideally like to rescue a dog aged 3 - 5 as I think the have a harder time finding homes unlike puppies, but would a puppy be better as he would grow up with my dogs?
I would really appreciate any advice you might be able to give me. Have you owned Staffies with other dogs and have you had any problems with your Staffie and your other dogs?

Re: Hi all, I'm new to Staffies
Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
If you are thinking of adding a Staffy to your family it may be a good idea to take your dogs along with you when viewing potential other dogs. I'm sure the rescue centre would be OK with this and may even advise you to take them along anyway.
Just give them a call before you go and explain the situation they can then match you up with a choice of dogs that would be compatable with your own.
Sorry but I have only ever had one dog at a time, but there are others here that do have multiples. Good luck in your search for your new friend.

Re: Hi all, I'm new to Staffies
Hi there I have 2 girls who get on well they do play fight alot but they are pups. I would also suggest you took your girls to visit the new dog. A boy would probably be better. Most staffie rescues have had some dogs in foster homes so they know their personalities. Not all rescues are from bad homes sometimes there are other reasons why an owner can't keep them. xx

Hi and welcome from me and Tilly
As Kathy says , the rescue are the best people to advise as they work with the dogs and in many cases they know the dogs backgrounds , whether they have been around other dogs , children and will always home accordingly. Very noble of you to go for an older dog as well and you will not be dissapointed with the rewards you get back from a staffy if you put the work into them. Lastly , generally speaking , as it is not always the case, a male would be better for you as you have 2 ladies already, and please take your girls to meet any new housemates.
Good luck

Re: Hi all, I'm new to Staffies
When I met my oh he had a staff and a toy poodle I had a collie and they all got along fine
After we got a gsd ( ok a pup) but all 4 got on well
Staff was 4 girl
Poodle was 8 boy
Collie x was 2 boy
Gsd pup 4 months girl
So with good introductions in a neutral place you can have a wonderful fur family
Good luck with your new addition who ever it may be

Re: Hi all, I'm new to Staffies
Thank you all so much for your replies, you have been really helpful.
The rescue did match us with a lovely female Staffie but later on we got a phone call saying that because my girls are aged 4 & 5 and the Staffie is 3 years old, it wouldn't be suitable with three females so close in age.
As a first time Staffie owner, would it be better to get a younger female? (with a big enough age gap between her and my girls). I've never owned a male dog before, is there a big difference in temperament?
Thanks again for all your advice.

All staffies in general are very loving dogs in some respects bitches can be worse than dogs and I was always told the bitch would be the dominant one so imagine for you 3 girls all arguing over who's boss, but in general a boy and a girl will get along better . Like I said before it's not the be all and end all bit its how most people advise , I was also told around a 3 year age gap as well. It just all goes towards increasign your probability of success
