New puppy bit of a handful! Advice? Empty New puppy bit of a handful! Advice?

Post by xQuartzOnyxx Tue May 15 2012, 11:47

Just got my new puppy Quartz home...he is 7 and a half weeks old (please don't leave mean comments, it was on the (perhaps bad) advice of a vet that it would be ok). He is a cutie but a little terror!
I have read a lot of training books before hand, but wow it is difficult to put it into practice on a staffy puppy who can't stop bouncing around the room Smile

Quartz is settling in nicely. He doesn't seem to be scared at all, and is curious about everything. Firstly, we are worried about starting his clicker training. I have been trying to teach him basic commands like 'watch me' and 'sit'. The 'watch me' is ok, because I have a tasty bit of sausage in my hand, but he keep jumping up when I try to use the 'sit' command. I attempt to put it above his nose and follow it down, but he just tries to jump and snatch. Any tips, or perhaps I am expecting too much of such a young puppy?

Also, a question about crate training and toilet training. We have a nice comfy crate, which he seems to hate! We pop him in there when he is fast asleep (this is alright), but we can't persuade him to venture inside of his own will, even when he has a stuffed kong/ toys in there! Can you help? We need to crate train him, because at the moment, he won't let us leave the room without going mental!
He seemed to be puppy pad trained when he came home. The first day he was as good as gold, peed on the pad everytime (we praised him a lot for this). Now he is peeing everywhere...when we pick him up to put him on his pad, he stops, and walks off...2 seconds later he pees elsewhere.

My sister has a Pomeranian who is very dog friendly (albeit a bit jealous). He has come up twice to see the pup. They play rough initially, and then the Pom starts to snarl and growl at the puppy...and then they will play again. Is this OK to let them have a play?

Sorry about all the questions!!! I just want to do the best for my doggie, and have a nicely trained staff as an example of his breed, am just a bit nervous about how to go about it! Any advice would be appreciated.

He is asleep on my foot atm Big Grin x

He is likely still getting used to his new home and has a very short attention span. Never too early to start training but keep the sessions short, probally 5 minutes or so a piece and try to end on a positive note.

For toilet training take him outside or the area you want him to go every hour or so as well as after playing, sleeping or eating and keep giving lots of praise when he gets it right.

At his age he is still learning bite inhibition and likely the older dog is letting him know he is overdoing it a bit.

7 and a half weeks is ok, don't worry you won't have anyone shouting at you! Big Grin

And yes, putting the theory into practice is much harder than you think. Laughing

With such a youngster you will probably have to gently push his bum into a sitting position to start with cause otherwise the excitement will get the better of him - just keep the training periods short & always end on something you know he can do!

Perseverance. Is there a particular food/treat that he really likes? If so, put some into the back of the crate & just let him sniff them out. Don't shut the door, just let him wander in & out whenever he wants. It'll probably help if you cover three sides of it with an old blanket or curtain.

If you take him outside every hour (or even half hour) and praise him to the skies when he pees or poos out there, plus after every meal/sleep/play then he'll soon get the hang of it. If he has an accident then don't say a word, just put him outside & clear up the mess. At his age he doesn't have full control of his bladder or bowels, so it isn't his fault.

Not a problem as long as you supervise the play & stop it if it gets too rough. If the pom looks like he's getting irritated by the play just stop them & let it calm down for a while.

Whoa whoa whoa, slow down. No dog can learn clicker or anything really that young. Give him a few weeks to learn that he alone and in his new home. The only things you should be enforcing now is his AH! for no, don't touch that or don't do that as in biting/mouthing your hands. As for toilet training, the only way to do this properly is to take him out every half an hour (yes that much) and when he goes potty lots of praise. You can't just wait until he looks like he is goign to go or he will have accidents and you will have a trail of wee from the living room to the door hahaa

Good luck, he looks very cute!

Just relax & take things a bit at a time. He can't learn everything all at once & you wouldn't want him to - that'd be no fun! >Smile

What are you feeding him?

Poor Onyx! Hope he's better soon.

Well atm he is eating Pero puppy with applaws...the family we got him from were feeding him winalot, so we mixed the tin in with what we wanted him to eat. His bowel movements seem just fine atm LOL.

We would like to feed him Pero STB when he is older, along with homemade mince meatloaf..or maybe raw, we haven't decided yet.

Thanks for posting the pics, he is so cute xx

There are a couple of members on here that use the Pero Staffy food I just cant remember who it is doh

I havnt heard anything bad about that I remember though, so it should be OK to feed this. We also have members who use raw too, I'm sure these can advise on this in due course.

Slow down have a cuppa and try to relax a bit then you can enjoy all the puppy playtimes ahead. Good luck with it all
