Gutted
We have to find a new home for Sapphire and I am absolutely gutted
My 11 year old daughter has been losing her hair, the back of her head is almost bald. Her test results were back today and it turns out she is allergic to Sapphire's fur and the doctors think that this is why she is losing her hair. So we have had to make the horrid decision of finding a new home for Sapphire.
I don't want to give away my little pooch, we all love her to pieces but my daughters health is at risk. If we keep sapphire my daughter will have to have steroid injections and creams which we all know are bad for long term use.
I'm here to ask if you can give me some advice on looking for a new home for Sapphire. What do I look for in her new adoptive family? How can I check that they are good people. The thought of giving her to someone and they don't take care of her properly is giving me nightmares, literally. I also don't want to give her to someone for them to later decide they don't want her.
Do you know of anywhere I can go to get help in finding a good home?

Re: Gutted
I have been asking them. My mum has 2 already and both are males and have a history of fighting each other over a female whether she is spayed or not so it's a no go there. My sister has one already and is currently living with someone else due to her landlord kicking her out, so Sapphire wouldn't have a stable home. Other members of my family don't want pets. I really i would love someone I know or a family member to take her so we still get to see her, but either they can't have her for personal reasons of their own, already have enough pets or I don't trust them enough.
The breeder already has 3 but he is going to try and help me find a home for her, but i can't rely on other people to find her a home, i feel i should do it.

Re: Gutted
My advice would be to contact a SBT breed specific rescue. They have fantastic rules in place to ensure her the best possible home. She wont have to go into rescue u could keep her until a perfect forever home is found

Re: Gutted
Just add that plentey off people i know do live with thier animals and thier allergies. Some ways they have done this are having next to know soft furnishing ie) blinds no curtains, hard floors no carpets, leather sofas, no rugs cushions etc. No dogs up stairs plently of hoovering like 3 times a day, brushing dogs twice a day. Just some ideas if u hadnt thought of them before.....not judging at all btw my kids will always come first as well

Re: Gutted
Are you absolutely certain it is the dog hair your daughter is allergic to without question ??
I would be so heartbroken to find out later that this was the case and I could of kept my pet.

Re: Gutted
Sorry to hear this
Now you know what the problem is, can't you try to prevent it by following the methods blaze (Carly) has suggested...and research for other solutions on top of those?! It must be worth a try surely.
Best of luck with whatever happens.

Re: Gutted
Just to add my bit, i think it would be better just to let her go now. If you tried all the above and it didn't work, you have wasted a lot of money redoing the house and your dog will be older and less likely to get re-homed. Puppies re-home faster, just the way it is unfortunately.
I'm sure your doctors are pretty sure it's an allergy, but if you wanted to try the above i would also suggest that maybe have saph stay somewhere for a while to see if your daughter improves which would give you a definite answer.

Aw I'm so sorry to hear this. I'd be completely devastated. I agree with Hayley though, do you have someone who could look after Sapphire for a week or two just to make absolutely CERTAIN that your daughter is allergic to her? Imagine how awful it would be if you rehome her only to find out later that your daughter's allergies are actually caused by something else.....
If all else fails, as suggested already, SBT rescues are definitely the best way to go to ensure that Sapphire ends up in the perfect home. Good luck, I know this can't be easy for you.

Re: Gutted
Hi, you wrote that your Doctor 'thinks' the hair loss is due to your dog, that is nowhere near saying that it 'is' the cause. Of course your daughters health is paramount, but maybe you should ask for a second opinion regarding the hair loss, before taking action that you may regret.

Re: Gutted
I would love to offer to look after Sapphire for a week to see if that helps either way but I don't have a break from work until mid June and I presume you are looking to have your daughter at ease sooner than that. Would it be affordable to book Sapphire into kennels as a holiday will also see how you all get on without her without it being permanent.
I really hope you find a solution
