Heartbroken leaving my boy at the Vet (neutering) Empty Heartbroken leaving my boy at the Vet (neutering)

Post by rodders666 Mon Apr 30 2012, 14:30

We had him checked last week as we were told to wait until he was cocking his leg, but at almost 1 year old he still squats. As we are not studding him we wanted the operation done, so the vet checked him over and said he was fine to be done.
Well, it was that time.....time to take Baxter to be neutered and I was devastated when they took his lead from me and took him through Sad
I had to quickly step back in give him a quick hug and a kiss then leave before I started to bawl like a little girl.

Got the call an hour ago to say he is doing fine and I am picking him up in another 90 mins.

We've been out and got his favourite treats and a new teddy

I can't wait to give my brave little boy a big hug Smile It's the first time he has been away from us and not in his own home since we got him.

I'm dreading kennels now (3 nights in June) as I feel lost after just a few hours lol

Lol, he's always dopey & snuggly anyway. He still thinks he's a tiny puppy and tries to curl up in my lap, then gives me the evils when his backside and head fall off as though it's me who's shrunk Smile

Bless, he will be so calm and dopey. Lexi was a totally different dog on the dope. I wish she was like that all the time!

thanks peeps.
well, Baxter has been home 2 hours now, he is still bit out of it but still wants to 'be Baxter'. we're trying to get him to rest and sleep it off, but he just wants to keep on reminding us he needs sympathy.
he keeps bumping into things with the cone, but he does have a rather snazzy lime green bandage on his leg Smile

looks like he made an impression at the Vet too......she said he was a pleasure, he's adorable and such a lovely dog and she would happily take him home herself....lol

Speedy recovery. They sure hate the cone of shame don't they? If he leaves his stitches alone, you might be able to leave it off with exception of when you are out and can't watch him. Seems to make it a little less horrid for them.

Hey
I have got so much use full info from this site, thank you all......My pup is three months old and So placid and gentle and would love him to stay that way. My previous dog ran all over the park leaving me trailing in the wind, after the females.. I just can't bare taking that responsibility of chopping him as surely they are after all a mans Jewels ??? Maybe that is stupid of me?Any how as i have gathered from this gr8 site i don't need to worry till he is 1 year?? Is that correct?
I am so confused as to what to do??
Thank you to any one who is interested in posting advice and taking the time to help and read my post

It obviously all comes down to personal choice, and you will get loads of different points of view! What you have to remember is that certain hormones that are not released until & during maturity are necessary for the full mental & physical growth of your dog. If you neuter too early the growth plates do not close at the right time & the dog could become very 'rangy' - leggy & quite 'teenager-ish. You also run the risk of him not becoming a confident adult & that could result in fear aggression & nervousness.

Also, be aware that neutering is not guaranteed to stop your dog wandering/humping/being dog aggressive!

My own preference is not to neuter at all, but if you are going to, then try to wait until your dog is at least 18 months old, preferably 2 years.

I'd never neuter before 2 years old as a dog is not mature before that age, I don't neuter full stop. However it's your choice and it's done now, hope he recovers quickly Smile
