Many different methods and none necessarily wrong. Try out a few like:
1. Walk 3 miles a day, treadmill 20 mins a day, spring pole 15 mins a day, tug of war 5 or 10 mins a day (This will keep him in shape).
2. Walk a two half hour walks, treadmill 30 minutes, springpole, tug of war, flirtpole. (This will too).
Diet also important. If kibble give them just under manufacturers requiremnets. Weigh your dog each week until desired weight gained. Then adjust the diet accordingly. Read up a lot on various methods and ways of dieting, maintaining weight or putting it on. Over time you will figure it out.

Re: quick Q
Some people put packs on their dogs, it gives them more of a workout at the time without having to do twice the amount if you know what i mean? I think theres a thread going about it now?

Why the reliance on treadmills? Surely it'll be far more beneficial to your dog to exercise properly at the park etc. At least they won't be bored out of their skulls on a treadmill!
