ive had a puppy for 6months now and been slowly gettin him house trained. however we are looking after another staff the age of three who seems to have reverted back to a puppy and is urinating and pooing more than the puppy. it only occurs at nightime though, during the day he seems fine any suggestions?

Hiya and welcome Smile

I take it the dog your looking after is fully house trained, if so he could be marking his territory (even though it isn't his!)

How long are you looking after him?

Hi there. As said, this new dog will just be marking and will perhaps be a bit out of whack with the new situation. Not to alarm and i don't mean to generalise but most dog attacks/incidnets happen when someone other than the dogs owner is looking after the dog or it is in a new territory. So just be vigilant with your puppy and any guests.

hi
yes he is fully trained. his temperament is brilliant towards the puppy and geusts, he has been with us before the puppy he was fine up until about six weeks ago and continually soils his room every night now. its abit of a random set up we were suppose to be looking after him for a week but now were in this situation. the puppy is in the back room while the dog gets the middle room and living room so he isn't confined.

So how long do you think the situation is going to last for ?? If its a period of time then if its only night time the best thing is going to be go back to basics with a crate . Have you tried getting up through the night and letting him out to see if it helps obviously it's not a good long term solution but if its a short period and stops the mess?? does he get a good walk or a garden pitstsop before bed ??

Hi & welcome to the forum.

I'd say the dog's routine has been mucked up & he's not sure what's happening...he sounds anxious.

If this is going to be a semi permanent thing then you'll have to go right back to basics - act as though he's a puppy that needs house training & take him outside evry hour or so. For the next few nights it might help if you get up about half way through & let him out for a toilet break.

In the meantime make sure that any accidents are cleared up thoroughly - a solution of biological washing liquid will do the job - so that he isn't tempted to keep urinating in the same place all the time.

Be patient & don't tell him off for any mishaps. If he has an accident then just take him outside & clear up. If he pees/poos outside then loads of praise. He'll get better once he's more comfortable with his situation.

he has been with us 8 months and my girlfriend has known him since the age of 8weeks and has seen him on a daily basis since then. his owner had him in a crate as a puppy so think that might be the best option for the next few nights. i let them out in the back garden or a quick walk before bed aswel. he knows he has done wrong aswel because as soon as i open the door in the morning he tries and hides.

Poor little fella, he's confused. Do his owners see him regularly?

i know it a shame he is a brilliant dog. they used to come daily but now its not as often sometimes weeks between visits. the owner still says he is coming for him when he sorts perminant accomodation out which maybe soon. i just dont understand he has never gone to the toilet in his owners home or mine up until now. nothing new has changed recently that i can think of, im wondering if hes attention seeking of some sort evan tho they constantly get attention?

Maybe he's missing them? If they're seeing him every so often then he'll be just getting used to them not being around when suddenly they pop up again! It might be a sort of protest thing.

It might be worth a quick trip to the vets to make sure there's nothing physically wrong?
