Advice: Feeding Schedule
So when I first got Gabbi I was told (RSPCA) to split her kibble into 3 portions - 1/3 morning, 1/3 lunch, 1/3 dinner
A fortnight ago, I thought surely it makes more sense to feed her more in the morning as she hadn't eaten all night and would burn it off during the day?
However, I've since been told that she should have most of her food as her evening meal (even though there is no evening walk) and I'm confused!
Can anyone offer any advice please - she is just over 4 months and current schedule is as follows:-
8am - wake up, BREAKFAST - 100g JWB
10am - 1/2 hour walk
12.30pm - LUNCH 75g JWB
3pm - 1/2 hour walk
4.30pm - DINNER 75g JWB
11pm - bed

Not too sure at 4 months, but maybe change to 2 meals a day.
I feed more pm as she is sleeping and it can digest, less am as thats when she is active and burns it off

Re: Advice: Feeding Schedule
If you feed a large meal in the morning she may still be dogesting it when you walk her during the day. So, if you feed the larger portion at night, it will have at least 8 hours of sleep to see it through properly.
I'd keep her on 3 meals for another month or so unless hse looks like she's getting fed up with one of the meals. When she gets to about 6 or 7 months old you can cut down to 2 meals (morning & evening). Personally, I keep my dogs on 2 meals a day for life, with the main meal at about 6pm.

Re: Advice: Feeding Schedule
I have a question about meals also so thought I'd tack it onto this thread...
I was also told to feed three times a day, but Callie has no interest in breakfast. Nibbles a little only, then turns away. She does end up with a few shreds of turkey, her preferred treat, in the AM for successful pottying (and I'm not giving those up since I REALLY want to encourage the pottying!) But it's not that much turkey. She eats other meals well, drinks water in AM. We feed her dinner around 630, not terribly late.
What do you think? She's 10 weeks and has been with us 5 days.

Re: Advice: Feeding Schedule
p.s. I can't do dinner earlier, as the 2-3 days I work I get home at 6.

Re: Advice: Feeding Schedule
At 10 weeks she should, really, still be on 4 meals a day! I wouldn't change to 3 meals until 3 months, and then 2 meals at about 6 months or so.
I would find out roughly how much she is eating & then split that evenly over at least 3 meals, preferably 4.

Re: Advice: Feeding Schedule
well, I certainly won't drop a meal then thanks for your input
she is just not a frequent eater I don't think. Will skip breakfast and is hungry at lunch. Today nibbled breakfast, ate some, not a lot, of lunch and was hungry at dinner. I'm giving her exactly the quantity she was getting at the breeders.
I am picking the food up after 15 minutes, right?

Re: Advice: Feeding Schedule
Ciao Marco,
Callie is great...I get the sense she is a happy girl. She wakes up, plays hard or zooms around (which can land her in her crate) for an hour or so; then trots around following us, very curious, or sits and chews a toy or wants to cuddle; then sleeps (snoring loudly). Then repeat. She basically has three speeds, it's funny.
She is an escape artist though--figured out how to climb the walls of the 2-foot puppy pen immediately. And she LOVES to eat mulch.
My kids (12 and 16) are in heaven, especially my little girl--your daughter must be also?
How is your Polly doing with the collar? I saw your post about being scared on her walks? I hope she is feeling better...
