rubbing * on carpet
just recently my bruce has taken to dragging his * along the carpet - no need to describe anymore im sure you've all seen it. However its getting alot more frequent like a couple of times a day at least. Is this a sign of anal gland issues? just wondering if i need to take him to the vets...

Yes I would say he has blocked anal glands.
Now you can squeeze them yourself, but I wouldn't no how and never wish too either lol! Xx

No
Depending on your relationship with your vets, some will let you see a nurse. Give them a call and ask Xx

Re: rubbing * on carpet
My only advice on it would be to wear goggles and a face mask, and do it outside and away from anywhere you will be i.e. the patio or a conservatory.. The smell of it is unbearable.
You just need to stand your dog and keep them still while you get a tissue and hold it over the anus hole. use your finger and thumb and push in a bit and then squeeze them and you should get the whiff and there should be horrible gunk over your tissue. USE GLOVES.

Use one of the better ones - Milbemax, Advocate etc.

....or just get the veterinary nurse to get her/his hands dirty!

Re: rubbing * on carpet
There are some videos on Youtube of how to clean out the anal glands I was going to post, but didn't want to upset Janey too much
Just do a search there if you really want to watch it, should have a warning at the beginning of them though

No, that's not right. If they don't need emptying then don't do it. Most dogs empty the gland naturally when they poop. If you keep emptying them manually you could end up damaging them. Or getting gunk all over you for nothing.
I'd still let the vet do it....at least he/she's paid to do it!

Re: rubbing * on carpet
Troy does this but I don't think it is worms. I wormed him when I got him. He usually does it first thing on a morning.
I read about the glands, if it is something I can do myself then great. His next worming treatment will be due soon, so I'll try using a better brand and see if he stills does it.
If he does, then I'll be looking up the video's because I'm not paying out £25 (assumption, same price as a consultation?) for someone to do something I can do myself.

I'm with the crowd that would pay not to have to do this myself!! Eww it's bad enough when I have to pull hair or grass from her backside!!

Re: rubbing * on carpet
When he was settling in, he had anxiety and would * and * everywhere anyway which I had to clean up, so just doing this once in a while won't hurt.

Re: rubbing * on carpet
What a lot of people do is ask the veterinary nurse to do it (cheaper) while they watch to see how it's done - then in future they do it themselves.
I'm not one of them.

Re: rubbing * on carpet
I think it's usually an indicator of worms or full anal glands but it can also be an indicator of an allergy, especially if they itch and scratch other places a lot.
I think anal glands only usually become a problem if the dog hasn't had firm 'movements' for a few days so hasn't emptied them naturally.

Re: rubbing * on carpet
If your dog hasn't got worms or allergies -
it could be glands (usually cleared when pooping) -
http://www.ehow.com/video_2275318_express-dog_s-anal-gland.html
I also read it could also possibly be mites, as Taz did this and she had no other health issues - which can be cleared with Thornit canker powder

Re: rubbing * on carpet
Heston has had this problem several time since we've had him 1st 2 times we had the vet do it for £££ and he cried when the vet did it (no bedside manner)!!! My vet nurse friend showed me how to do it after that and we now do it when he's having a bath....it does take 2 pairs of hands to hold him/ do the business, but its less messy as you can wash it away quickly. After the bath he won't talk to the person who was at the business end for a few hours
