HELP! my staffy keeps getting attacked
Hello!
i have just joined here and i have just had a staffie off a friend of mine (she was moving to a flat and needed a good home) He is a wonderful beautiful dog called storm and he is blue brindle, anyway apart from being the most wonderful, sweet, lively dog EVER i keep encurring the same problem when it comes to larger dogs, he keeps getting attaked! every dog we meet he lies on the floor has a sniff then waggs his tail and wants to play, he did the same today with a larger dog and the other dog attacked him, we did our best to pull them apart but we slipped and storm bit the lip of the other dog and wouldnt let go, luckly no major damage was done and the other owner understood that it wasnt storms fault. It worries me that this always happends but only with larger dogs and its never ever storms fault he always gets attacked first,
Is this a common thing? are they just un popular or is this dog psychology? please help this has only got to happen to the wrong type of dog owner and i could end up with him being put down for no reason :-(
Thanks in advance

Re: HELP! my staffy keeps getting attacked
Hello and welcome from me the wife and marley
from what you have wrote if it's the other dogs attacking then other than avoiding them i don't think there's a lot you can do, other than finding somewhere quieter to walk, but i'm sure someone will be along with better advice

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
We have also encountered the same issue with Rocky. We now have to avoid our local park at certain times of the day that we know a certain dog/dogs will be there.

Re: HELP! my staffy keeps getting attacked
Hi and Welcome!
Starting now I would try and avoid walking at busy times/find a different route or something.
then I think maybe he's being too submissive when he meets bigger dogs so they think he's an easy target?
or maybe he's really nervous of the bigger dogs and is sending them out the wrong signals?
Either way I would try and get him to mix with some well socialised dogs to build his confidence and show him how to behave... it could also be your own energy affecting the situation, eg if you're nervous everytime you meet a bigger dog, that's adding to the unstable situation!

Re: HELP! my staffy keeps getting attacked
hi welcome my staffy is a pup he likes to run over to children people and other dogs all the time if off the lead he thinks everyone loves him and wants to play he can be very enthusiastic to put it nicely does make a growling sound which makes other dogs go on defence luckily we havnt encountered a fight yet. Im going to try training classes in our area and puppy/dog partys its where they get to socialise and learn at the same time nd could be a good way to introduce your new baby to all sizes of dogs good luck try googling in your area or your vet may be able to tell you about them

Hi and welcome from us and Suki. If he is having problems with certain dogs I would just avoid them. Try looking for well socialized dogs with good handlers and let him interact with them.

Hiyas.. glad you posted this because I think my Pippa is going to have the same problem. She just loves everyone and thinks they will all love her too. I am thinking of doing puppy preschool.

Re: HELP! my staffy keeps getting attacked
Hi and welcome. One of the reasons that dogs attack others is anxiousness. Try to remain calm within yourself above all else and try and build up your dog's confidence slowly by introducing Storm to more socila dogs at first. Humans are the only animals that nurture the weak. In the animal world, weakness, anxiety etc is not tolerated

Re: HELP! my staffy keeps getting attacked
I would definitely try to find some friendly dogs that he can associate with so he learns not all dogs want to attack him....are there any dog clubs or anything you can join ..the more he socialises the better.. just have to find friendly dogs to do it with!
My Jethro is very submissive.., and other dogs can pick this up.... he has had a jack russel try to attack him and even a tiny little fluffy mutt cocked its leg on him !!
