Licking problems?
Hi my staffy is having a problem with constantly licking! If you are within 3 feet of him he has to lick any part of you he can see. And god help you if your at face level with him! My question is, does anyone else have this problem ? And if so is there anyway to fix it??

Re: Licking problems?
aw lots of kisses. Lemmy always has to give you lots of kisses. Let him have a quick kiss then tell him no more and push him away

Re: Licking problems?
Thanks julie, I just feel so bad pushing him away when he is only trying to give us love. But so far the pushing technique has not worked! We will keep it up though

Suki is a big kisser. We don't mind but pushing away will work over time.

Re: Licking problems?
Taz has phases where she licks a lot, but it's not all the time - I do discourage it with a firm no, which she accepts:)

Re: Licking problems?
Kasidy was almost called Kissy, she eventually learnt not to lick every person she met but still sits beside me sticking her tongue in and out trying to control the urge.

Re: Licking problems?
Ours does it too, god help anyone if they get down to his level he licks them all over! Bit embarrassing if its a guest though I'd like to see what advice you get with this, I don't really mind a few kisses here and there but it's just when it's to the extreme which is all the time! Lol

Re: Licking problems?
Diesel has learnt 'no licking' as a command as I get an allergy to dig saliva, she tends to nuzzle me instead or puts her head against mine.
Shes very good with me tho, and when she smotheres the hubby in licks and he's had enough he will tell her the same no licking and she will stop.
At the start we would say the command and push her away, but now we don't need to push, she knows what to do.

Re: Licking problems?
How old is your Staff? When does it occur the most? Misty likes to try and nibble my ears ( more than I get off the OH ) but prefers to lick my daughter a lot, but only if we let her.

try to just hold his head down a bit while your cuddling him as well. he still gets his cuddles but without all the licking. Lemmy gets it now but it did take time. He has learnt to come for a cuddle not a kissing marathon but sometimes we still have to tell him to stop it.

Re: Licking problems?
Yeah, once Dex had settled in it became near constant unless he's knackered (which we aim for cos we would look like prunes otherwise!) we can get him to stop but it takes a lot of us yawning in an over the top wayand tucking the exposed skin away, folding arms etc cos saying no doesn't seem to work! Mind you it's lovely for a bit, can just get a bit much!

Re: Licking problems?
I have the same problem - no matter what I've done to curb it Henry still licks! He just goes crazy trying to lick every part of you in reach - especially outstretched hands when anyone goes to pat him. The dog trainer at my Canine Good Citizen classes isnt impressed by it nor is my partner who has gone to all lengths to stop it (even wacking him - much to my annoyance). He still gets licked to death when he arrives home from work though and as soon as he takes his boots and socks off Henry goes nuts trying to lick his feet (followed by much cursing and 'get losts' and worse lol!) Good luck trying to stop it - I would appreciate any tips as well!

Aren't dogs gross sometimes but there's nothing like the feeling of having a staffy lick your sweaty toes

Re: Licking problems?
Dad says give us a kiss, and Poppy will lick dad on the nose...that is the only time she licks, when asked to...
But Poppy will keep licking her paws, cleaning herself her dad says, after biting on her lovely large thick rubber rugby ball...with her paws holding it in place...
If she wants a cuddle she will nudge under your arm, till you lift up,and give her cuddles...

Re: Licking problems?
i just say cuddles and she can be anywhere in the house and comes running and jumps on my lap 1 paw either side of my head and cuddles me and the kisses follow and i squeeze her and she loves it she is all her dad,i will need to put an up to date pic on soon as she is now 17 months and 24.7 kg not bad for the runt of the litter she is as big as most of the male staffs around here ,and she is as soft as a bucket of frogs wants to meet and greet any dog ,person , cries to meet children in pushchairs so i think i got the best of the litter even as she was the runt. i have taken her back to meet her mum and dad and she is as big as her father to the shock of the breeder.

Re: Licking problems?
I shouldn't say I wish I had this problem but I am currently in the process of teaching Lucy to perform the trick "kisses"! She will give them on rare occasions but it's 1/2 or one lick if I'm lucky! I guess she shows affection in other ways (snuggles, nudges, etc) but I still wish she gave kisses!
She also is neutral about belly rubs and booty (by the base of her tail) scratches Such a silly pup!
