Puppy Fat on Neck
Hi,
I have a two year old staffy and still has too much puppy fat on his neck. He is about 1kg over weight in general and is on a diet and exercise program to lose this and bring him to his best condition. He was 2kg overweight but after some training and proper diet has lost 1kg. To date I have been allowing him to pull on rope with his two front feet off the ground to work his back legs and neck and shoulder areas. He loves it by the way
Does anyone else have any GOOD ideas to lose puppy fat around the neck area? Any tried and tested exercises out there. Ideas that do actually work would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
Plenty of exercise and running around should do the trick. I'm sure he will do just fine.

Re: Puppy Fat on Neck
Thanks. As well as getting him in shape I would like to show him as someone said it would be good if he could lose the weight on his neck so just asking. Is it simply a matter of plenty of running about. He does about 5 miles a day everyday and as I mentioned has lost quite a bit with his new diet included. However the neck area remains somewhat puppy fattish and so wondered if there was anything else I could do to succeed in this area?
Any good, tried and tested, or others having experienced this, answers will be appreciated.

Re: Puppy Fat on Neck
Hi & welcome to the forum.
It depends really what you mean by 'puppy fat'. Staffs often have a bit of loose skin around their necks which fills out when they are excited or angry. Is it loose skin, do you think, or really fat?
If it's loose skin, then it'll stay no matter how much she diets. If it is fat, then more of what you're already doing should do the trick!

Any pics? ... I've not seen "puppy fat" on a 2yr olds neck before ?? seems a strange place to be holding fat

Re: Puppy Fat on Neck
Hi and welcome from us and Suki. Pics would be helpfull as it may just be loose skin. The pulling will strenghten her neck muscles over time which could help. She also still has a bit of time to grow.

Re: Puppy Fat on Neck
if he's a red staff, it's natural. Marley is 13 months and has a lot of loose skin on his neck, despite 4 long walks a day. but also staffs can fully mature at age 3 so you might see a difference over the coming months as he matures and gets to full growth

Re: Puppy Fat on Neck
Hi, here are a couple of photos. As you can see when it is lying there are just some bumps rather than being smooth. However you can easily pick up the excess (although it does not sag when left). She is still 1kg over weight and will lose that over the next 6 weeks.
I will continue with the diet and exercise she has been on along with spring and flirt poles. However any other advise is welcome.

Re: Puppy Fat on Neck
That's loose skin, not fat & it's perfectly normal! As she matures she will probably 'fill' it out a bit, but they all have a bit of loose skin around the neck. If you ever get the chance to feel her neck when she's angry/excited (maybe through play) you'll see that there will be less to grab hold of!

Re: Puppy Fat on Neck
Thanks guys. I don't know why this person said that to me originally then and they are experienced with Staffys. Maybe she has lost some since they said what they did, I don't know.
Appreciate your input and I'll see what they say when she enters a show this year.

There are some people who like to strip every ounce of excess flesh off of a dog in the name of fitness. However, that won't necessarily make the dog fit, just lean. Most dogs have looser skin around the neck area, but staffs do seem to have a little more of it than others!
Oh, and I agree with bigwazza - more pics, she look gorgeous!

This is after she has lost 1kg of weight and sometime after the person said it. I think you are all right. It's not fat.

Re: Puppy Fat on Neck
She's a very beautiful dog, I can see why you want to show her! What are her lines? Personally I think a lot of the current show dogs are too skinny and lightly built, I like a stafford to look solid.

Re: Puppy Fat on Neck
Just to answer your question shakespearesdog she has carnig, rellim, judael, sparstaff, acutestaff, marstaff, constone's, rapparee, belnite, betchgreen, ashstock, boldmore and lots more etc lines behind her, going back to the 1970's. There are obviously more as you look at each branch of the tree going back to the 1930's.
