Re: gentleman jim
he was meant to be one of if not the first Staffordshire bullterrier male to meet whatever criteria was set for the breed. His breeder wasn't shy at making a penny or two so he was put about. btw, this was In the dark days when dogs were tested through fights and plenty were killed young so they were overbreeding some stock to get what they wanted

Re: gentleman jim
There are about 5 lines that most of today's staffs go back to. Gentleman Jim was the breed's first champion, so he would have been used a stud a lot! Mind you, he was a lovely looking dog!
My old boy Bandit could be traced back to him.
P.S. The likes of Gentleman Jim would not have been tested through fighting - the breed (the show side of it, anyway) had moved away from this by that time.

I agree Gentleman Jim was a great looking dog.
I found this great article on Joe Mallen who owned Gentleman Jim.

Another interesting article about the different lines that Caryll mentioned - http://www.staffordmall.com/stoutheart-mainlines.htm
Makes good reading

Re: gentleman jim
strange aswell unless points were not deducted for scars
unless he never got any and the rest in show did thats why he done so well

Re: gentleman jim
some of the show dogs were protected with lesser adversaries but nevertheless put to fight in order to justify being bred from as what they referred to as gamenes was an essential part of the breed.

Re: gentleman jim
Ch Gentleman Jim's stud record covered an 8 year period and he sired 255 offspring.
Show staffords were not fought.

Re: gentleman jim
to be fair I wasn't around then and can't be sure but by some accounts Joe Mallen used to test his stock through fights. and judging by the type of man he seems to have been I wouldn't be surprised. but then again, I was definitely not there so I can be mistaken.

he may of done with staffy that was to big for the show ring but you wouldn't been able to show a dog with scars all over them;)

That's what I thought, too, but that newspaper article definitely says otherwise!

He probably could, but I've seen pics of Gentleman Jim many times, and there aren't any scars on him at all!

Re: gentleman jim
Its speculation that he was fought, anyone who took the time to show the dog and make him the breeds first champion wouldn't take the chance. Also the fact that he lost a canine, this would be frowned upon in the show ring. He would have earned his keep from the stud fees. Not saying he didnt have other dogs that he fought.
Whats this about show dogs being pampered .......... they are staffords not poodles
