#@&*$@* Jethro !!!!
First topic message reminder :
We are staying at a pals place and walked down the pub tonight for tea. We were gone about three quarters of an hour all up if that.Took the boys for a walk first, then locked them in their crates. Came back and opened the door, Jethro's crate sitting there wide open... empty !!! Somehow he got out and went berserk and he has ripped and pulled all the vertical blinds off in the kitchen. Our friend is renting this place...Tony doesn't realise how bad it is yet..he is watching Heartbeat in the lounge. Remember how I said Jethro has nearly caused a marriage break up..tonight is another classic example....Far out....!! I am not happy !!

Re: #@&*$@* Jethro !!!!
Gizzi has a nervous disposition and I give her Valarian Root. Its a form of sedative but herbal.
I have also tried using DAP collars so they perm have the pheremone about them but it didnt work for me.
Gizzi is also and escape artist and her cage has 2 doors- I have one perm shut with cable ties and the one we use has climbers carribena clips to keep it shut even if she popped the sliders out the latch!!
She has calmed down since going on the valarian but we also added a herbal supplement into her diet called Calm Down- Its from an onliine store called CSJ Herbs for dogs, its really good.
Hope you find something that helps Jeth out with his problem xx

Re: #@&*$@* Jethro !!!!
thanks for that Claire......you are lucky over there, there seems to be heaps of calming supplements for dogs..there are bugger all over here. I was giving him valerian tablets at night to sleep but they discontinued the ones I was giving him , and the only ones now are huge, and they are too hard to shove down his throat!
I will be tying him in his crate with cable ties from now on !

Re: #@&*$@* Jethro !!!!
You can get Valerian from holland and barret on line, they do them in capsule form and i split them over Gizzi's dinner in a morning and again at night.
CSJ will deliver over seas hun, my friend gets them and she is in the USA.
Hope cable ties work

Re: #@&*$@* Jethro !!!!
I have just bought a bottle of liquid valerian root...smells disgusting, but I am going to put some in Jethro's food as of today. He gets arthritis powder everyday in his food, so hopefully the smell of his arthritis powder will disguise the valerian! Wish me luck!!

Re: #@&*$@* Jethro !!!!
my grandmother had the same problem with her last staff Zook. he lived to be 18 years old, so he was.. a walking fossile by the time he passed away. he needed to be given some kind of drug from the vet because the sheer damage that dog did when left alone for even 10mins was shocking. ripping down blinds, chewed a hole into the wooden floor, ripped of gates, smashed through a glass window once. It was getting that it was dangerous for him too because he would rip his way out of screen doors and we were scared he would run off and get hit by a car. but if there was anything that could be damaged, it would be damaged by him. but with people, he was the sweetest sugar coated darling you could ever meet.
I'm scared Romeo is going the same way. As when he is with me he is a darling, i left him alone for like... an hour today while i went to the store to do my shopping, came home to find MORE wall paper missing!

Get someone in the UK to get it and mail it to you. May add a bit to the costs though.

Lovely photo! You definitely don't look like you've just turned 50! Has Jethro seen the vet yet? If so, how did it go?

Re: #@&*$@* Jethro !!!!
Oh that's stunning. He did a brilliant job. I've been thinking of getting something like that done of Kita and framing it.
Pretty good shot of you too.

Re: #@&*$@* Jethro !!!!
OK Jethro went to the vets this afternoon. I officially have a certified looney dog!
Richard said it was a combination of separation anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, old age and anxiety..what a mix!! And would you believe one of his dogs suffers from a similar thing.
After a lengthy discussion we are trying Jethro on endep tablets..a human medication for bipolar disorder. He is on one tablet twice a day, and just had his first tonight. Have to give it a fortnight and should see a levelling out of his moods hopefully by then. Richard said it makes the odd dog go abit aggressive..so because Jethro has such a loving nature I hope that it won't have that effect on him! Anyway if all is going well Richard will supply me with more tablets..he just gave me a fortnights worth for now. If that doesn't work he said there are other medications but one of the vets that work there is studying animal behaviour etc and is right into this sort of thing.... so he said I could see her if we have no luck. ..but I am hoping and praying the endep work!
anyway is a pic of him tonight watching me cook tea.

Re: #@&*$@* Jethro !!!!
Aawwww bless him
Hope the Endep work, in humans it is also used as an Anti depressant. So I googled its use in dogs and I ended up on a "baby forum"
I'm adding the link as there is one post that is pretty reassuring re it's use in dogs. Hope that's ok.

Wonder what your vet would make of Kita's looney behaviour

Re: #@&*$@* Jethro !!!!
Trouble is she's not anxious or stressed, just lost and confused like she has "doggy dementia".
Doesn't help that she can't hear you calling her and once she's on a "Kita mission", you have to run after her to stop her disappearing.
I did read up on it a while ago, so I better check it out again.

Re: #@&*$@* Jethro !!!!
Jethro is definitely going deaf....when he is outside I call him and he doesn't hear me but when I really yell his name he will spin around and look at me...and when he is snoring inside I can be right next to him calling and calling his name and he doesn't hear me..
His nose works well though as he always knows when I am getting his grub ready and he will miraculously appear in the kitchen !

Re: #@&*$@* Jethro !!!!
That's what amazes me too Vanessa.
Trevor's favourite comment - "can't see. can't hear, but she sure knows what her nose is for".
Mine is more like "hear no evil, see no evil, speak no..way!!! I know there's food here somewhere"
