Roxie's first training lesson :)
well yesterday me and roxie met our trainer and it went well
she's already improving on the lead and her toilet training seems to be under more control as she's getting more exercise.
she now sits and curbs without being asked and waits until i say go to cross the road.
still working on the food. waiting till i can say 'okay' for her to start eating.
but she is getting there.
i am going to try and teach her to speak.
i know staff's arent guard dogs they are protecting dogs.
but i want roxie to let me know when someone's at the door or when someone walks in.
atm she just looks at the door if someone knocks or if someone walks in she rolls over.
the trainer recommended letting her rag on something and when she barks in excitment say speak and give her a treat. and she will soon pick it up.
so my other half is going to give it a go tonight.
xx

Re: Roxie's first training lesson :)
Glad to hear that roxies training is going well. Being dogs that are so eager to please training is relativly easy, or at least easier than some breeds.
Well done Roxie, keep up the good work.

They are clever! And she seems to coming on a treat! I'd forget about the speak training though for now, it's not going to help her bark at the door unless you command it, so not really needed, wouldn't you prefer for her to just roll over when you have guests
Nice one on the progress Xx

Re: Roxie's first training lesson :)
would it not eventually click that when the door goes she would speak without being told? she would just assosiate the door knocking to bark? i am very happy for her to be so open towards people but would like the extra safety as when im in the house alone and upstairs or in the shower (third floor) that i know if someone's come in the house. xxx

Re: Roxie's first training lesson :)
Well if your training the speak command, then its a command needed for them to speak. Give it time and I think she may suprise you. Moo has never barked, ever, but after time she now does bark at the door if someone knocks, I haven't trained her to do it though. And as soon as they enter she licks them to death.
In my time with Staffs, and I know people will disagree, there not a guard nor a protecting dog! Just soppy as you like Xx

Re: Roxie's first training lesson :)
yehh i am kind of getting to know that they are so soft haha!
i was thinking about learning her to speak, then working on when the door knocks to say speak and keep doing so until she gets it
ahh well there's plenty of time for that.
she certainly is lynne. she hasnt pee'd in the house from 1pm - 5:15pm.
so she's definately learning.
i have been looking for signs when she may need a wee.
such as going to the back door or sniffing the floor.
when i notice she does this i let her out but she's always in a rush to come back in.
have you any theory behind this?

It could be the cold. In the summer Suki likes to lay outside but in the winter she sprints right back into the house and jumps up on the couch.

Well done
If you would like her to bark when there is a knock on the door then show her so when the door goes excite her with who is it lets go see ect it may take you to bark and encourage her to copy you till she knows what you want always give her a treat she will soon associate the door with bark treat. But remember only open the door when shes calm sat and waiting
