just watch for signs of her throwing up or having trouble going for a poo. if she shows any signs of anything or discomfort then go to the vet but i wouldnt worry too much they can handle more than we give them credit for. if your still worried in the mornign ring the vet and he will tell you what to do or look out for.

Post by Guest Thu Jan 05 2012, 21:32

A friend's GSD stole a whole cooked chicken a few months ago, and she was so scared that the dog would suffer badly because of it. Luckily, she was fine (although she had a bad stomach for a couple of days).

Having said that, she was lucky. I don't want to scare you, but cooked chicken bones can act like little daggers inside a dog's stomach/intestines. Hopefully it'll pass through with no problems at all, but keep an eye on her for a couple of days - any listlessness or vomiting get her to a vet asap & tell the vet you think it could be because of a cooked chicken bone.

A bit late now, maybe, but I'd feed her something to act as padding around the bone pieces as they go through the intestines! Otherwise just pay attention and hopefully it'll work out alright. Fingers crossed!

thank you all, i did feed her some bread, i know that sounds really stupid, but in my panic, all i could think was, when the kids or me have eaten fish, we always have bread in case a bone gets stuck! she seems ok, she will be sleeping with me tonight... no one is leaving anymore plates with anything on ever in my house again.. they eat it where i can see or it goes in the kitchen in the bin....i feel dreadful and slightly stupid!..and really worried.. it was a drumstick bone not that makes a difference. will keep you all posted and vets number is on standby...

Ledger has swiped the odd chicken bone for some reason the kids round here stick their 'fried chicken' boxes in the hedges and if I'm not quick enough to fish the bone out of his mouth he will eat it but I don't worry too much after when I was young our second dog Pepsi managed to polish off a whole cooked chicken tin foil and all leaving the glass dish completely in place (pushed to the back) on top of the oven she had absolutely no adverse reaction

Obviously there are some risks but as the others have said just keep an eye on her

The bread may do the trick if there are any sharp pieces. Might also keep things moving along. Hopefully she doesn't have bad gas too, but that is not really important. I'd be more worried if it was wings or back, but still... It isn't always the case that it causes trouble, it just isn't the safest. Kinda like when a kid lets a grape drop on the floor but the dog is right there. We do what we can, but there are always going to be small oopsies.

Don't beat yourself up, it happens! Actually, a drumstick is better than a wing or rib as they don't splinter quite so easily.

I'm sure she'll be fine. Love Struck

Thats great news! They can be a worry, I'll never forget when Moo ate a huge dead jellyfish on the beach, there's me straight on the phone to the vets to ask if it was dangerous! Several poo's later she was fine. Xx

Post by alexiastra Fri Jan 06 2012, 17:41

I had my family over a week or so ago and we had just come back from a walk. Dora had gone inside and we had taken her lead off but as the rest of the family were faffing with muddy shoes and making their way back inside, Dora dashed back outside before we could stop her. We had notice a chicken bone on the ground as we had come back off our walk and made a large detour around it. She had obviously noticed or smelt it. We called her back and she dashed back to us, shattered chicken bone in mouth. I retrieved most of it, but I'm sure she ate some of it.

Long story short. We had a lot of sick to clear up that evening - she chose the perfect time to do it too - just as we had sat down to eat our indian takeaway sick

Think I might just throw stuff in my own bin when I notice it around in future.

Glad River is ok. Try not to feel bad about it, there are times I have felt like I must be the most stupid owner around and shouldn't be responsible for myself never mind dogs and a child. And don't worry about the poo talk, some days I feel like thats all my conversations consist of with having 2 dogs and working in a care home Laughing
