Collars inside
Ok, I have seen a lot of photos on here of your dogs with their collars off inside the house. Just interested to know who leaves their collars on indoors and who pulls them off?
We leave Tinkerbell's on, never really take it off unless she is in the bath.

Re: Collars inside
Always leave Ty's collar on. It is a Rogz that you fit to size when on so it is a bit of a pain to put on and off. (It does not have a clasp)

Re: Collars inside
River dont wear a collar in the house, she sits down when she comes in for a walk for you to take it off, then trots off to her water lol...

Re: Collars inside
Always take mine off - I've seen & heard of too many really nasty accidents from collars left on.
I would always advise otehr people to take them off as well, unless there's a good reason not to - and I don't mean because it's a pain to take off (sorry Ty).

I've never really thought about it to be honest. Our sheepdog always had his collar on inside so we tend to leave Tinkerbell's on too!

Vinnie dosent wear his collar in the house, as Caryll said I fear of accidents when he is the garden or in his crate. He sits happily to have it put on when we go out

Re: Collars inside
Ledger always had a collar on but he has cut his back paw somehow and I was worried he would make the wound worse when he scratches his neck if he catches the tag or buckle so for the last few days no collar in the house and now he doesn't scratch his neck! Could it have been irritating where he has been chipped or something?

Re: Collars inside
I have heard some real horror stories of accidents because of collars being left on indorrs. Eg; claws getting caught when scratching, collar getting caught on a knob or something resulting in strangulation (my first BSD's uncle died from this), two dogs playing & one getting caught in the other's collar resulting in panic & a full on fight. I could go on, but the risks to me are just not worth it - I always take my dogs' collars off indoors.

Wouldn't it irritate you, after a while?

We always take Rockys collar off when we come in from a walk. Again to avoid anything happening to him whilst we are not there and it causing an irritation.

Rommel only wears his collar when he's on the lead - never in the house. I also take the collar off when he's on the off-lead part of the walk too.

I wouldn't go as far as doing that. It is a legal duty to have a collar and id tag on a dog when in puclic. And besides that if her were to wander from you for whatever reason, you can be contacted with info from the tag. I think it is also unsafe to take the collar off when walking because if he were to be attacked or get into a fight, there is nothing to grab hold of.
Might start taking Tinkerbell's off when she is indoors then. Our last dog had so much hair that you couldn't find his collar so the risk aspect was a bit less, with Tinkerbell being short haired I suppose the risk is much greater!

Neither Duke or Dhaysi wear a collar indoors - like Caryll I know of and have heard of a few dogs where it has proved fatal

Re: Collars inside
we leave their collars on because without we cant grab them to part if they are getting too rough or boistrous. lemmy never had a collar untill we got lottie because he has a harness when we go out. lottie's lead is clipped onto her collar she walks better like that

Re: Collars inside
Jeez Caryll, once again you have scared me stupid. Never really thought about it. My old man and Vedder had choke chains which were only put on for walkies. Must rethink this. Off for walkies now.

Re: Collars inside
i hardly ever put collar on clio when we go walkies i trust her and i have complete control, didnt realise it was illegal, and as far as another dog attacking her and me not having anything to grab hold of i wouldnt want to grab hold of her i would want her to be able to defend herself without any restrictions stopping her from doing that and it would be the attacking dog i'd be gunning for to get hold of

Yes, the law in the UK states that your dog must have a properly fitting collar (ie not a check chain) with an identity tag attached. The tag must contain your surname, phone number & post code.

Ju walks naked in doors unless there are guests round then he will either have a collar or loose check chain.

Personally I would rather be safe in the knowledge that I can grab hold of our dog should she be attacked. It is too dangerous to leave her to defend herself so I would rather be able to pull her away. Plus I wouldn't really stand back and watch her fight just so I know she can defend herself, I'd rather pull her away incase she or the other dog is harmed.
But yeah it is illegal not to have a collar and Id tag on a dog in a public place, more common sense though of you ask me.

If Violet's going to be on her own, or in her crate at night, her collar comes off, otherwise she just keeps it on. She looks so funny without her collar on though, Rudi Nudey.

Re: Collars inside
I leave Monty's off. Besides, his Collar is too big for him now, I need to get him a new one. He doesn't particularly like the collar on him anyway, when I go to put it on his for a walk, his ears drop back and he slyly takes a step back !

i would never stand back and watch my dog fight just to see !!!!!!! all im saying is i would rather she was free to defend herself rather than have me choke her by "grabbing" at her collar leaving her completly defenceless because i would have hold of the end she would use to defend herself leaving the attacking dogs to rip her rear legs off or i pick her up off the ground completly because i reckon an attacking dog would just give up and walk off or chew on my shins, just saying each to there own

Made me chuckle , we always take Tilly's collar off indoors , the OH calls her naked, my daughter calls her "Moley"

Re: Collars inside
Daisys comes off in the house when I have her, It causes her much irration with her allergies and eczema, but when we are outside she has it on for her tags, also her lead (leash) is always on outdoors also, if we are caught without it the city fines 100$ then the apartment complex charges $100 and you risk getting evicted. So what do people think of collars/harnesses?

Re: Collars inside
I prefer collars (I use a half check on Dempsey, but have always used flat collars for my other dogs, other than training when I have used a check chain), but that's just because I don't feel in control enough with a harness - many people prefer harnesses, and if you get on ok with them then they're great.

I take Bella's collar off at night or when I'm out because she is in her crate.
On walks I use the collar with Millie and the last few walks I've used a harness with Bella as she chokes herself pulling. she starts training next week and when I took millie there they advised a halti head collar so it might change again next week lol.
