Dog are supposed to wear a collar, it is a legal requirement that they have a tag with owner details on.

Dogs can sometimes get out of a harness as I found out tonight

Re: a bit random but its bugging me
If we use the harness (rare as Tinkerbell hates it) then she also wears a collar. Like Kathy said they can get out of a harness so both ensures you can still grab them should you need to, and it is also a legal requirement. So if the tag were on the harness and the dog escaped it then there is no tag on the dog.

Re: a bit random but its bugging me
i also question this, if they choose to use a collar why not just use the collar alone? some people may say that the dog may pull more on the collar but this is where training comes in.
i use a harness for jake, hes also micro chipped so if he was to ever escape from his harness (which i don't think would happen) he could get traced back to me.

Buddy, the wee nuscience, has managed to somehow scratch himslef out of his collar in the house! He looks nekked without it!
The collar or harness thing tho is personal preference i'd say, whatevver makes you feel happy and comfy walking your doggy!

Charlie keeps getting his tag off! I've replaced it sooo many times. He got his last one off last night so I'll be buying him yet another one on Monday!

Re: a bit random but its bugging me
When I take Violet to the park, we walk there on her regular lead and collar, but when we get there, she goes onto her extending lead and needs her harness for that. Looks a bit daft walking her with a harness that doesn't have a lead clipped on to it, but it's easier to put it on before we leave than mess about with it in the park.

Re: a bit random but its bugging me
I use both for two reasons
a - one is a tag collar that is left on at all times
b - it gives me the opportunity of having two sets of rules when we're out walking.
Leash on collar = perfect leash walking only
Leash on harness = recess - a little pulling and wandering here and there is perfectly legal
This makes for extra safety (tag on at all times) and more efficient way of teaching polite walking. Win-win!

Re: a bit random but its bugging me
To me it's not really a pull/no pull thing (although it's technically easier to teach your dog to pull with a collar than a harness, it's perfectly possible to teach polite walking with either collar or harness) - but it's a dog safety issue. To me pulling on the leash when walking isn't an option. But if/when I ever have to pull my dog away from something in a panic (crazy dog, crazy person, crazy driver - whatever) or if he's somehow spooked I don't want him to hurt his trachea/neck. To me the risk of permanent injury from a collar isn't worth it on every day walks, but I do use the collar when I teach heeling for obedience or every now and then if I'm to lazy to put the harness on. I also generally use the collar in crowded places like on trains in rush traffic as it's easier to control weaving in and out between people that way. (Could probably do that more or less as easy with one of those harnesses where you can attach the leash on the front, but I don't have any.)jodie&jake wrote:i also question this, if they choose to use a collar why not just use the collar alone? some people may say that the dog may pull more on the collar but this is where training comes in.
(But when that's said there can easily go a week between the times my dogs are on leash... )

Well said and totally agree.

My two don't wear collars in the house or outside, they just have harnesses with two tags on each.

Re: a bit random but its bugging me
If you use a harness (which I always have for all my bullys, they are too strong to pull against their throat IMO) you MUST put them in a collar aswell!
The first time you have to try and break up a fight, and the only thing you can grab hold of is the harness, you will understand why !!

Re: a bit random but its bugging me
Ours always have collars on with there tags and are microchipped, then we use a slip lead but ive ordered stan n tara harnesses so they will have harnesses aswel as collars on a walk. its up to individuals what they choose too use for there dogs.

i must admit that we use a harness for lemmy but collar on though so i can grab him. he's slippey little buger and the collar gives me something to grab on his way passed me

Re: a bit random but its bugging me
I don't use a harness, I think Dempsey reacts & behaves much better with a half check collar.
I must admit that, having had a da Staff & now a dominant EBT, a collar is a must for me. You just don't have the control with a harness that you do with a collar.
