Im Worried about my Staffie
Hello,
Basically for the last 5 days my 3yr old english staffie's behaviour has changed somewhat. She usually is very boisterous and loves to play tug or chew on her ball. She also loves sleeping on the bed.
Instead she has been very lethargic, doesnt want to play and of a night time doesn't want to sleep but rather just stand there looking at us and when she does sleep, just sleeps on the ground beside the bed. She also has become very quiet and when she is in a playful mood, she would normally try and snap at my nose or growl, but doesnt do that any more.
Do you think its just her being unwell or maybe she could be slightly injured?
The other thing i have noticed is that normally she is a very well trained dog. Offer her a treat and she will sit, lay down, beg, etc. At the moment, she refuses to do any tricks? Could be related?
Cheers

Re: Im Worried about my Staffie
most likely rat poisoning. but they are running tests to be certain.
Most likely rodenticide or thrombocytopenia.
im hoping the earlier and we got it early enough

Oh, God, why do people put that down where other animals can get to it?
Lots of good wishes & prayers winging their way through cyberspace to your poor girl. Hope she's better very soon.

I know something is wrong.....what was saying was well done for taking her the vets when they thought something may be wrong instead of waiting for another week to see how things go. At the time when they took her the vets they didn't know that she was bleeding internally

this im afraid isnt 100% true.
the only reason i took her to the vet was because i saw the very early start of the internal bleeding on her belly. prior to this i thought she may have just been acting funny, or some other emotional distress.
as it stands, i spoke to the vet this morning and she is stable, awake and alert. She has been on IV drips and plasma transfer for the last 8hrs with vitamin K injections. About 2hrs ago they started her on blood transfusion as her red blood cell platelet count level was low; thou her blood clotting levels had returned to a stable level.
so for the moment until i call them tonight, she isnt out of the woods yet, but is on the right path to recovery.
im just thankful, although it should have never happened in the first place, that it was the rat bait Racumin she had which is based on the chemical coumatetralyl which is a multi-feed rodenticide. But i have removed all of the baits from the house and will be spending the next day or two searching for any rats that may be around the yard while the dog isnt around.
would like to say thankyou to everyone for the well wishes and support. once this whole saga is over I will post up a thread of my staffie to show you my fav companion. Will also keep you up to date with her progress here in this thread over the next couple of days.

Re: Im Worried about my Staffie
just another update.
she is still at the vet. It seems that every time they give her a bag of plasma her clotting factors improve, but after a while when the bag has finished they start to worsen and then has to go back onto another bag of plasma. so essentially she cant recover properly yet without the assistance of the vet. its just a matter of playing the waiting game now.

Re: Im Worried about my Staffie
thanks everyone...
we are staying positive. We are hoping that after this next bag of plasma, that she might improve on her own and will hopefully be able to be discharged in 2days time. but of course dont wanna do anything prematurely encase she may relapse.

Re: Im Worried about my Staffie
Well the vet has released her back to us now. She is at home and doing rather well. She is already back to her usual boisterous & piglet self which makes it hard to try and keep her quiet so she can heal quicker. Her bruising caused by the internal bleeding has almost healed, just has a rather yellow belly at the moment.
She is also on vitamin K meds for the next 4 weeks, but thats a small price to pay to have her back with us.
In the end she ended up having 6 bags of plasma, a blood transfusion and constant supervision for 5 days straight. And she is lapping it up with the attention. I dont know how we are going to be able to go back to the way things used to be, she is just enjoying it too much.
