how tall is your staffy?
Re: how tall is your staffy?
shane wrote:superstew wrote:To be honest ive not seen any staffy weighed at any show ive been to and when the two winners are announced and are stood together the bitch is never taller than the male sometimes about the same but never taller. All the dogs at show bitches together males together are about the same height but some broader than others to say they are getting too big is not a true assessment in my opinion
it must be different in England then. all staffys that are entering a show in Ireland are weighted and measured before hand, and if they don't meet the standard their not allowed compete. whats the point in having a breed standard if your dog you are entering in the comp doesn't conform to the standard. think about it
i think i will deff have to agree with shane on this one what is the point of breed standard if its not stuck to even down to what caryll has said a half " here or there or a pound or two should not make a differance well if its not within breed standard it should

Re: how tall is your staffy?
The trouble with that is carting around scales that'll take a stafford! I don't think weight should matter too much, because if a staff's the right height & is balanced, then he'll be the right weight.

Re: how tall is your staffy?
in Ireland when their is a dog show affiliated to the Irish kennel club, each dog is measured and weighted upon registration, and if any dog does not fit the breed standard he/she is automatically disqualified, and will not be allowed to be shown, as i said before what the point in having a breed standard if a a dog doesn't conform to it, if thats the case why haven't we seen any 17 to 20 inch staffys winning dog shows, i will tell you why because 17 to 20 inch staffys dont conform to the breed standard.

Re: how tall is your staffy?
Shane, we're not arguing whether or not they are winning. They're not, because the judges can see if they are vastly oversized. But the English KC will not, any time soon, introduce scales or measures for staffords. It's left up to the judges to spot a good un that's the correct height/weight.

Re: how tall is your staffy?
Probably not much taller. Dogs in general grow to their full height in the first year. Then they will bulk out to width by the end of the 2nd year

Re: how tall is your staffy?
as above ha hahe will probs be the size of the collie but bulky like a staff

no shane just the english kennel champ shows which in itself was hard work up and down the country most weekends. He was good enough (im biased) to compete abroad but too much work and money.

Re: how tall is your staffy?
I think it's sad that so many Staffords are being bred to be bigger than the standard. If you want to breed a bigger dog, you shouldn't be breeding Staffords, and if you want to have a bigger dog, you shouldn't be getting a Stafford.

Bomber is 18 inches at 14 months. I've read 16 inches is max. Does he look mixed any comments on him would be appreciated. I've also heard at this age is when there head and muscles should really start maturing is this also true. Thanks

Re: how tall is your staffy?
I measured from the ground to top of withers. He's also 35 pounds now so i'm thinking he"ll be way over breed standard by the time he's full developed. He's a pet so Im not planning on breeding or showing but was just curious if alot of Staffies past the standards or if he's possibly mixed or just not show quality.

Re: how tall is your staffy?
Anthony, is Bomber a Staffordshire Bull Terrier or an American Staffordshire Terrier? AmStaffs are a lot more common in the States than Staffords and are larger. At 18" Bomber is above the Stafford standard and at the low end of the AmStaff standard.
Looks like Anthony is in the US, Steve. So the type thing probably doesn't matter.

Re: how tall is your staffy?
No I was told he's an English Staffie and I've read on the Amstaffs and APBT's and he seems to have more of the SBT qualities except he's a little taller. His head seems to be more wider on top and triangular then pits i've seen. But I'm no expert at all I wouldnt be surprised if he was cross with either of the other two. I was just wandering what people familiar with the breeds think. I was told that their heads should go through a growth spurt at his age would that have already happend?

Do you have any bigger pictures of him? It's hard to tell from the avatar. Start a thread in the Photo Gallery: https://staffy-bull-terrier.niceboard.com/f8-staffordshire-bull-terrier-galleries
Also, the breed is called Staffordshire Bull Terrier, there is no such breed as an English Staffy (this is one of our mod's pet peeves).

I'm pretty sure they be some type of ban on type in place what the point in banning a dog when people could breed a similar type of dog.

Well, he wouldn't be 'show quality' because he'd be way over sized, but your avatar looks good - he's a handsome boy!
Why not start a new thread in the gallery section & put some pics of him on there? We'd love to see him properly!

Re: how tall is your staffy?
Stanlie is 17" and weighs around 21kg at 3 years none kc reg
Hooch is 17 1/2" and weighs about 25kg at 5 years kc reg
The original standards for staffords were between 15" - 18" before the stafford was recognised by the kc in 1935.
Thats when the standards then got changed too betwen 14" - 16" so your bound too get throw backs from the original standard.

Re: how tall is your staffy?
To be honest, if you're not going to show, a couple of inches makes no difference! However, if you don't have KC papers you could be accused of having a Pit Bull 'type' by the uninformed.
Guest- Guest
Re: how tall is your staffy?
Thats a fear i have as stanlie is not kc registered.
I can honestly say if anyone tried to take him from me they would have too kill me first.
Also kc reg dogs are being taken away too so really being kc reg dosnt really stand for jack. Its all about how a dog looks if it has i believe over 60% "pitbull type" characteristics then kc or not your dog could be taken from you.

Re: how tall is your staffy?
BSL in the US tends to define "pit bulls" as American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Even some "pit bull" advocacy groups define "pit bull" in that way.Steve wrote:CatStina wrote:

EDIT to add: Every place that Pit Bulls are banned in the US, Staffords are banned as well. Being a Stafford already makes your dog a "pit bull type-dog" in the US.

Of course not!!
"Every place that Pit Bulls are banned in the US"
I was trying to say that Pit Bulls are not banned all over the states, but in every place that they are banned, SBTs, ASTs and anything that looks "pit bull-ish" is banned as well. There are very few states where it is banned. It's mostly in counties or cities. There are a few states where BSL is banned. My state of Maine is one of them.

Although that's true, if your dog is registered with the kc & you can prove it (with testimony from the breeders & a judge) then you are more likely to get the dog back!

Re: how tall is your staffy?
Romeo is 14 inches and useally outweighs taller staffs. He was 23kg last time he got weighed. If his front legs weren't so short and were brought up level with his back end i believe he'd be 15 inch. Hes very roach backed. I prefer smaller staffs to larger ones, 13-15 inch is my preference.
A stafford should be small enough to smuggle under your coat should the police catch you dog fighting is the old adage. Fights were organised by weight so a dog would have to super powerful for its size, not a huge, slow dog. Joe public seems to forget about the 'terrier' in the staffordshire bull terrier.
