how tall is your staffy?
Re: how tall is your staffy?
Bandit was around 17.5" but I always say 17". He was quite tall for the time. Dempsey's a lot taller, but then he's not a staff!!

the kennel club standard for staffys is 14 to 16 inches for both male and femaleMILLY-MOO wrote:How tall do bitches get ??

MILLY-MOO wrote:How tall do bitches get ??
The standard says 14" to 16" (dog or bitch) so you'd expect a bitch to be nearer the 14". But that's just a piece of paper! In reality they can be from around 12" to 18", depends what the parents were!

Re: how tall is your staffy?
the height for both dogs and bitches is 14 to 16inches, this height and the dogs weight being in relation to each other, failure to conform to these size designations is a fault within the kennel club standards.MILLY-MOO wrote:How tall do bitches get ??

Re: how tall is your staffy?
I measured from the floor to the top of the shoulders. The middle of his back is allot lower but I think thats from where his saddle goes..........I don't make him wear it all the time..........just on walks for when my legs get tired

The official height is always from the floor to the withers (top of the shoulders, just behind the base of the neck).

Toro is 44 cm so I think it´s like ~17 in inches I think most of todays staffys are too big when we compere to standards? Am I right or what?
Other option is that in Britain u have standard staffys and we have big ones over here

Yea your right staffys are bred big these days which is sad! Everyone thinks my Ty is small "for a staff" but actually he's on the large side at 17" people think staffs should be these huge muscely dogs.....

Well, they should certainly be muscley, but they were once described to me as 'pocket battleships'. Loads of power in a 'small' frame. There have always been the over-sized staffords, but there seem to be more & more now.

memphis is 14.5 in
his dad is said to be on the big side at 16.5in

They're not exactly correct, although almost! It's easier & more acurate to check the Kennel Club Official Breed Standard:

Re: how tall is your staffy?
there's not too many staffys these days, that fit the height and weight criteria of the kennel club, they are a dying breed
Guest- Guest
Re: how tall is your staffy?
Maybe, but that's the standard breeders should be aiming for. If breeders don't like it they should be contacting the breed clubs & asking them to put forward a new set of height/weight ratios to the KC.

Re: how tall is your staffy?
i cant seem to fathom how a dog can be registered with the kennel club if their dog don't meet the kennel club standard, maybe they shouldn't issue the owner with a cert until the dog is fully grown. so they can check all the necessary criteria, this would bring back the staff to the original standard, but i do know that a dog, that is not the correct weight and height and the other criterias will be disqualified from showing.

That would be impossible, Shane, without bringing a measure & scales into the showring - and they're not going to do that!
Any dog from registered parents can be registered with the Kennel Club (as long as certain criteria have been met by the breeders prior to the mating & after the birth). The breed standards will always be open to 'interpretation' so you couldn't say "that dog can't be registered" or "that dog isn't up to scratch". Who would make the decision?

Re: how tall is your staffy?
sorry now caryll your wrong, they do weight dogs in the show ring when it comes to showing one example being the miniature dachshund, and whats the point in having a breed standard , that means i could show a staff who is kc reg and is 20 inches tall, and weighing 25kgs,dont think so.

Re: how tall is your staffy?
To be honest ive not seen any staffy weighed at any show ive been to and when the two winners are announced and are stood together the bitch is never taller than the male sometimes about the same but never taller. All the dogs at show bitches together males together are about the same height but some broader than others to say they are getting too big is not a true assessment in my opinion............

it must be different in England then. all staffys that are entering a show in Ireland are weighted and measured before hand, and if they don't meet the standard their not allowed compete. whats the point in having a breed standard if your dog you are entering in the comp doesn't conform to the standard. think about it

them two dogs in the video are proper kennel club standard staffys and they don't look if they are over 16 inches.
thats why they are in the show, what im saying is you cant show a staffy that is 19 or 20 inches in a kc show. and the vast majority of staffs being bred today are not with the kennel club standard.

Re: how tall is your staffy?
Shane I agree with that last comment I think not kc registered dogs are out of proportion, dogs are heavier than the standard for the simple fact is the diet had changed and moved forward since the standards were set

That's not what I meant. In England staffords are not weighed or measured. And are not likely to be. If the judge feels a dog looks as though it is over the standard he won't put it up, but a half inch or a couple of pounds here or there will get past no problem.
