New Pup! the search begins.
Hi guys. I finally decided today that the time is right and Im getting a new pup. We already have a 5 yr old (male/snipped) Jack Russell called Pepe and he's a handful, so i know a staffie pup will be 'headstrong' to say the least lol. What i really want to know is are there pro's or cons to getting a male or female? I know males are usually larger but Im looking for a well proportioned dog, not just the biggest one I can find. Which sex is generally more affectionate? Im sure I will have a thousand more questions and cries for help on here so I will thank you now for the coming months!

Re: New Pup! the search begins.
Personally I have always found the male of any animal that I have owned (dogs / cats / horses) more affectionate than a female. I have also found they tend to be more even-tempered but that's just in my experience ... I am sure you will get many conflicting views!
Good luck with your search

Re: New Pup! the search begins.
I have only ever had a male sheepdog and a femals staffie (not at the same time) so couldn't say which is more affectionate. My sheepdog was very affectionate but Tinkerbell is more affectionate, but think this must just be a staffy thing not because she is female.
Good luck with your search though!

Re: New Pup! the search begins.
Personally I would have a girl, you already have a male, and mixed is generally advised. I'd also say a girl because I prefer them (only had bitches), I think there more loving.
Good luck and have you considered rescuing

I would advise a girl. Usually the opposite sexes get along better

Re: New Pup! the search begins.
thanks for all input so far. Im not fully decided on getting male or female yet so I guess it will be down to how cute the pups I see are lol. last night I found a litter of 4 pups near me, 3 are brindle but one is a solid black male which is my first choice. they are ready for collection 1st Dec! Ive waited for this pup all my life, as we always had other dogs, and all I have owned b4 have been rescued, so this pup is 'The One' I've always promised myself. to be perfectly honest Im hoping that training a pup will give me as an owner more of a chance to know my dog, and re-train myself to drop any bad habits lol. if all goes well I should have pics up here over the next 4-8 weeks. fingers crossed!
ps, how does Zulu sound for a staffy name?

Re: New Pup! the search begins.
There are lots of pups in rescue too, if you wanted to give a dog in need a forever home, and want a pup, chances are, you'll find in rescue.
I'd also advise a bitch, because they'll get on better, but as for preferennce of male or female I prefer males. I've had both and I find males more affectionate, more obedient, and less temperamental. Having said that though, when we rescue next year, it will be a bitch, I really wouldn't have 2 males or 2 females together. It can work for some people, there are plenty of people on this forum with dogs of the same sex and they don't have any problems, but I personally would have one of each.
Oh, and Zulu is a great name

Re: New Pup! the search begins.
I'm going for first viewing today, both parents are show dogs and the owner is keeping one pup to show also. plenty of champions in their bloodlines and I've also seen pics of the parents, both look fantastic. If all goes well I will put some pics up here tonight. I feel like a bloody kid waiting for xmas now lol.

Re: New Pup! the search begins.
well first meeting went great and I've left a deposit for Zulu. only disappointment was that none of the pics are any good! I forgot to take a camera so we took 4 pics on my phone and 3 on my brother-in-laws but not 1 of them is detailed enough to see anything but a tiny black shadow lol. He's coming from a great bloodline with a healthy share of champions in there. met both parents and had several staffy-style face-baths lol, both of them were really happy and well mannered all during our visit. all-in-all I couldn't be more pleased, and his collection date is 23rd Nov. so not too long to wait

Zulu sounds great!
Can the breeder let you have some pics? When Dempsey was 3 weeks old, the breeder took some lovely pics with his phone & texted them to me.

Re: New Pup! the search begins.
Be very carefull if you trim those little black hooks on the ends of his feet .... seriously, with them being so dark, it would be very easy to trim too far and catch the nerve its literally the tip only to stop them hookin on the carpet etc. ....... jeeze he's so cute

Re: New Pup! the search begins.
yes Andy I will have to be extra careful with those little needle nails lol. the times going past quiet quickly so far, the actual date I can collect him is 23rd Nov. (the first ad I saw for the litter just said collection in 4 weeks so I guesstimated 1st Dec.) he really is a lovely looking lad and these pics dont do him justice tbh. yes Gem he is solid black, there are actually very few staffies near me and none are solid black. as for making the most of the peace and quiet, with a 5yr old Jack Russell here I honestly dont know what that means

Re: New Pup! the search begins.
well its been a while since i updated things here. Zulu is almost 4 months old now and has had all his boosters and worm/flea treatments. together we are beginning to enjoy our walks, up until now they haven't really been walks at all, just a short hop down the road and LOTS of sniffing lol.
only thing i'm slightly worried about is that Zulu seems to need his anal glands squeezed out quite often by the vet. cant have the lil man in discomfort, but they were done on the 19th Dec and had to be done again on 9th Jan. i've got my fingers crossed this won't need to be done this often forever
last time it was done the vet gave him some kind of mild steroid in a jag to help settle things and so far he seems ok. i will try to put up more puppy pics asap, camera is out of action atm but should be sorted again soon.

Glad he's doing ok! What food is he on? Sometimes a change of food will do the trick.
